My beam won't come out .It seems to be hung on the bumper bracket. The bottom has swung out but the top doesn't seem to want to pop out ! HELP!!!! ???
-
Six bolts in total. 4 in front - 2 on top. Steering box and tie rods and brake lines. Then it should pull right out.
-
it will roll on you when it starts to fall marc, just get a long 4x4 post 4-6 feet and hit it with the but end trying to roll it back into place, if you get it un wedged it will drop abit, the just repeat it will drop out or try using a jack
-
Got all the bolts out tie rods and brake lines off, does the steering box have to come out ?Everthing I read says it can stay on... In the manual I got it shows bolts in the steering coupler mine still has blind rivets in it
-
all depends on how the fit is - has the front end been pushed in before? If the front is un-molested it should drop out after a couple of wiggles - just break the seal of dirt etc.... If the front end has been hit before you might have a tight fit around the steering box
-
Seems to be in really good shape I would say no accidents .I tried wiggling it,almost like it is stuck on the rubbers on the top mounts, but I was all by myself so I didn't want to get to rammy and have it come crashing down
Thank for the help

Your car is a 74 to 77 right?
I know you're not gonna believe this, but get your hack saw out and buck off one of those bumper bracket extensions. The book doesn't tell you this, but it's either this or remove the whole body from the pan first.

Ya it's a 75...does it matter with one? When I narrow my tie rods which end do I cut? and how much do I cut off? I bought Geoff's 3" narrowed beam.
Agian thanks for everyone's input, living up here in the frozen north there's no to many VW people to get good info from

Was not that beam assembled?
Here is a CIP! picture:

I will have to do the same as you are doing, It is my understanding that you have to cut the spring and drill the notch where the tie rods will go.
-
Cut each tierod 1/2 of the total width the beam was narrowed. So your 3" beam will require 1.5" taken off either tie rod. Cut the end with the right hand thread, and retap with an M14x1.5 tap.

Since your beam is narrowed, you have to cut off both shock mount extensions.
-
Finally got the beam out!!!!!Do I have to weld the steering stops(adjuster) back on?
-
If you don't, the inner body becomes your steering stop. I can think of no reason to leave the steering stop bracket off.
