Title: Arrows on the piston
Post by: GL-Sheila on November 04, 2008, 06:57:29 PM
Quick question here, I understand that the arrow on the piston should be pointing towards the flywheel.  Just wanted to know exactly why, as the piston appears to be symmetrical, therefore, why can't it be oriented either way.  (The reasoning I'm asking is that we didn't check the direction of the arrows on the first two we installed and we're not sure if we had them oriented correctly. - wondering if we need to bother pulling the engine apart again to check/change the orientation.) Thanks

Ok, upon further research - we answered our own question - as the piston pins are off-centred, therefore the pistons can only be oriented in one direction.  Oooops - guess we'll be pulling it apart to check.  I guess better to do it now while the engine is still out of the vw.

Well, it turns out that we did indeed put two of the pistons back to front on the one side, so just as well we found out.  (Better now than finding out the hard way!)  What can I say - Noobs!!!
