Title: 12 volt beetle starter, will it work on a 58 beetle tranny, with 6 volt flywheel
Post by: bwaz on September 09, 2008, 05:47:58 PM
If converting a 58 beetle to 12V, will at Bosch SR15N starter bolt right it? Assuming it will need a starter adapter bushing when making the conversion from 6v to 12v, is the 6v flywheel ok as is ?
thanks

12v starter will not work on a 6v flywheel, and afaik, a later 12v flywheel won't fit a 36hp. A 6v starter will work OK on 12v, but it's a good idea to swap the solenoid for a 12v one or else it really hammers the drive gear into the flywheel.

For the 12 volt starter working on the 6 volt flywheel, isn't that what the starter adapter bushing is for, to be able to work on the different flywheel?

The bushing merely adapts the different sized starter shaft to an odd transmission, the teeth on the starter gear are different as well, square peg, round hole.
