Title: 200mm or 228mm flywheel for higher HP? clutch options?
Post by: Boost_Retard on April 18, 2008, 08:56:38 PM
a local guy is making me an adaptor plate to adapt a 5.5L AMG motor to a type 2 style bellhousing. at the moment the motor puts out about 350Hp and 380Ftlbs.. i have the choice of having a 200mm flywheel made up with a welded in hub..or i can go 228MM with a bolt in hub..that is unless i can find a forged 228mm flywheel? any ideas?

i am sure i can come up with many 200mm clutch options that will work decent with the power output.. but what about the larger flywheels? it seems to me that if i can get good clutch setups for the bigger flywheel i might as well go bigger? i have never looked into performance type 4 clutches, who makes a good setup?

anyone make a 228mm tripple plate billet steel flywheel setup? i think its called a tripple plate anyhow..
either way, i could use an oppinion on what clutch setup to go with.
i have a new garrett GT40 turbo charger for the motor as well, and plan on using it..so i would imagine the HP should end up in the 500+ range.. so im really looking the the best clutch i can come up with.
i will be picking up a mendeola tranny to take the abuse..so i dont want to mess around with a weak clutch. and i need to buy one before the adaptor can be finished.

any ideas?
thanks
Cale

Most guys only consider the hp of the engine when they pick a clutch.  This is wrong.  The clutch you need depends largely on the other end, the tires.  Drag slicks needs lots of clutch, street radials don't need very much.

i am running the off road version of drag slicks, so clutch is a must
