So the other night I went to go some were in the bug Started the car put the clutch in put it in first let the clutch out and BANG went no were, Tried to run through all gears with clutch in and out nothing. Towed it home and there is a thumping happening that sounds like it is coming from the shifter tunnel and some times it is quite a noticble noise
Any ideas anyone
Hope to start to get it out This weekend
72 IRS trans
Thanks Dave

With the brake set or wheels chocked put the car in gear idling and look at the big nuts on the drums (hubcap removal required), is one spinning? No?, then look underneath at the driveshafts and see if anythings moving there.
Next suspect is clutch disc.

I don't think it is striped brake drum as when I do not push the clutch in there is no grinding as I put it into gear, must be internal

You did check the cuppler (the tingy that hooks the shifting rod to the tranny) under the rear seat?

It means you have a double side cover IRS trans with a 4.12 R&P in your 72. IOW, the original gearbox.
You blew a CV joint? I've got plenty of used ones. Know anyone going from here to there in the next while?

should you need a tranny a have quite a few, and a six rib if you really want one.
Prob a cv like bruce says thou.
