well i did post it here in our classifeids first so some may have seen it. and yes it is definetly a project.

There is only 1 21 window bus on the samba that is cheaper then this one. this bus is priced alot cheaper then some swiss cheese busses.

I think once this bus is media blasted it would not look to bad at all, and there is NO RUST. It is a serious project and undertaking.

If its coming from Reno as you stated in your other post, how would you know what condition it really is in? Those photos dont tell anywhere near enough to make that judgement.

I have more photos then i posted. But yes you are correct, i dont fully know the extent of the damage. I am confident in saying that this is not a rusty bus.

If I had the cash I'd take the risk. Although I'd bet everything back is as warped as the hatch on that thing...
However 21 windows even for a project seldom come up that cheap.

how bad is the metal after being in an intense heat cycle like that?  It never would be the same metal as previous to a fire I would think.

Factoid; did you know that steel actaully loses strength faster than timber in a fire? Not that its relavent here

Actually there are strength tests they perform on metal after a fire to see if it is still ok. Now i have fixed plenty of fire damaged vehicles before, they have mostly been engine fires. The first one i did was a 1996 GTi years back and i was worried about the same thing, it was burnt from the A-Pillars forward and i was worried about the structural strength. I took it to airstrip to have it Blasted firewall forward, and i was assured that it would be fine. When i picked the car up from blasting it looked like brand new, i could not believe it. That car is now back on the road.

I currently have a 2003 BMW 325ci with a front end engine fire that will be fixed in the same manor, i wish i had photos of the previous fire cars but i dont. I will take photos of the progress on the BMW.

I think the bus will not be to bad, the reason the fire progressed so far forward was due to the fact that there is so much open space being a 21 window rag, it just got alot of oxygen.

I would rather restore this bus then pay double for a rusty one. It is the second cheapest one for sale on the market (samba) of all 21/23 window buses. The only cheaper one is rusted beyond belief, is incomplete and had a tree fall on the roof. Even if you purchased that one, by the time you bought all the rust repair panels, before even starting any work on it, you would still be ahead of the game with the burnt bus.

Its a BIG project, but i think the price is fair.

There's a reason you never see burnt cars being restored.

A few months ago on theSamba, there was a topic about a burnt Heb.  The way that car was saved was by cutting out the Heb only panels and transplanting them to a donor sedan.  The rear lid (worth many thousands of $) could not be saved.  That should tell you something.
Title: Seen This?
Post by: AirCooledRules on February 02, 2008, 10:59:00 AM
I saw that Heb, and that car is a completely different story. It only takes a couple minutes to engulf a complete car. That heb was probably in a garage when a house caught fire and burned for a long long time. This bus was maybe on fire for 5 minutes. Also as you can see the rear pillars and other areas have already been ground down, probably by a shop after the fire by request of the insurance company and you can see the metal underneath is in good shape. I would ofcourse replace the rear hatch, and the engine lid because its easier that way, but this bus is far from a loss.

P.S. you do see burnt cars being restored all the time. I have done a few, and i know others who have aswell. From any front engine car, to LOTS of Porsche 911's.

Does that one look like it was damaged by fire to you ?

That is my car though but it has already sold last week.

Just curious, that car looks to be very repairable, as the add points out. Why are all the cars you list written off in the states? Different insurance structure?
Title: Seen This?
Post by: AirCooledRules on February 02, 2008, 02:21:57 PM
There is alot of selection there. There are auctions ever day so you can buy anytime, unlike here, you have to wait weeks for interesting cars to show up, and when they do, the vultures all try to get them.
Title: Seen This?
Post by: Mike Scott on February 02, 2008, 02:36:41 PM
If it only has the relatively small amount of cosmetic damage shown, why would it be up for auction?

What I mean is if it only needs 5-6K to fix, as mentioned, you obviously paid less than 10k, why would any insurance company not fix it and give it back?

Essentially with your math, the insurance company would have to pay 30k to replace the car, instead of whatever they got out of the auction lets say 10k. Thats a cost of 20k instead of 5-6k, doesnt seem to make sense

Some people have replacement insurance and do not want their cars back after they have been wrecked. Case in point, have a look at the 2006 Saab 9-3 i sold the other day, it only has a scratch on the rear quarter and door. Plus some damage to the dog leg which needs to be replaced, it's a $50,000 car new and its Written Off aswell.

Not to get off topic, but that BMW had a pretty good hit to the nose and the airbag didn't open??????

I think I'll go buy one..... NOT!

The reason the bags never went off is because you have to have two or more impacted sensors to make contact in order to set the bags off although the hit was on the front it was off to the side were it is less likely to be able to deploy.
Title: Seen This?
Post by: AirCooledRules on February 02, 2008, 11:37:43 PM
Also, the airbag sensors are ussually located down low, so if the damage is above the \"frame\" Rails then ussually the airbags will not deploy.

Either way, Seat Belts will save your life, Airbags will break your nose.

Those are 2 SWAGs.  You have no idea how long each car was burning since you weren't there in person with a stopwatch.
Either way, it doesn't matter.  There's a big difference between the complex stampings of an engine bay and the large flat side panels of a Bus.  Those large flat panels of a Bus will badly warp with very little heat, whereas the panels of the engine bay can take more heat before significant warpage happens.  Even then, it doesn't matter since very few people would care if the interior panels of the engine bay were warped slightly.  Nobody paying top $ for a Deluxe Microbus would accept warped side panels.
That Bus is a gonner, and I feel sorry for the person who buys it thinking he can save it.

And you think you are?

Your such an arrogant ass know it all. The metal in that bus is damaged excessively, look at the hatch, its warped.

You are probably buying salvage vehicles out of the US so you can avoid the same requirements of written off vehicles in B.C.

why dont you enlighten everyone on the requirements that i am avoiding ?

And thanks for repeating what i said about the condition of the bus, i didn't know there was an echo in here.

Post by: Chris on February 03, 2008, 06:15:20 PM
Im sorry you said it was restorable? Did I echo that. You questioned others ability to judge a vehicle, and you pointed out how you can get cars sandblasted and post pics of BMW's.

There are many documented incidents of vehicles brought in from the US that do not carry the salvage title over through registration.

Your no expert and that is obvious by the things you post, I dont claim to be an expert either but I dont go posting a bunch of BS.

i was checking out the \"scratch\" on the saab too. and lack of a rear window, bumper, exhaust, the wheel & tire on that corner are probably gonzo....and who knows what else. but apparently it's sold. so there is an \"ass\" for every seat. that \"ass\" is going to get a whole lot more reemed once it gets the repair bill from \"kaminski auto debotchery\".

i dont think the bus will sell for more than $4500.

and jakey seemed to have his s#!t together here at the start, but then he pulled the 'ole switheroo and marbles went flying everywhere.
