Title: White Foam In Oil Filler Cap?
Post by: bochintz on January 20, 2008, 12:53:40 PM
I would like someone to answer this question please
where does this white foamy stuff come from that i found in the oil filler cap
and how do i prevent it? breather box maybe?
will it cause bearing wear or oil passage blocking
I have found it in valve covers as well.
Is it a compression thing
engine pressure?
condensation? or what
Thanks

Condensation, from not being warmed up enough to evaporate the moisture in the oil.  Usually found on vehicles used for short trips where the oil can not get hot enough.  Just change your oil more frequently if you only drive short trips  under 15 minutes or so, common in every vehicle used around town for groceries..

It's condensation, the cool, moist weather we have all been enjoying lately along with normal crankcase gasses create condensation in the case, sooner or later it ends up mixing with the oil creating that spooge you found.

Unless you can get your oil temps above 212 deg. for a while to boil it off you'll have to change your oil more often.
If your oil on the dipstick looks like oil and not milkshake your bearings will be OK but if you don't drive it often you could get rust on bare steel areas inside the engine and when that stuff starts flaking off it's just like putting sand in the oil.

not to be rude but it says your a mobile aircooled mechanic in your signature and you have mentioned your services in other posts, if you were an experienced mechanic would you not know that already?

thanks for the replies
It is now known for sure about the condensation!!!
as for the not to be rude part Chris Thanks.
Nobody knows everything and i don't claim to
I learn new stuff all the time working on VWs
LIKE...the starter on an auto stick is different in many ways than on a manual bug
and there is more than one way to set valves
thanks for the comments chris [_[
