Title: 67 To 68 Body Differences
Post by: bwaz on December 23, 2007, 04:46:33 PM
I'm wanting a carpet set for my 68 convertible and find that some of the sellers want to sell something from 56 to 68, then 69 and up? I thought that most differences to beetles were complete in the 68 year, is the pan and body that much different from 68-69?

A 68 still had the same heater outlets in the rockers.  Moved back and made really big for 69.
Also, a 68 used the same method of attaching the carpet along the bottom of the door opening on the rocker, just crimped.  A 69 had the rubber strip like later cars.

Although, a 68 had the shifter moved back, so the early carpet kit would not fit if the hole was precut.

I hoped you would chime in Bruce, thanks for the info! If I was considering it, would that make my search for a rubber mat set even tougher, or a must to move to a 69 because of the shifter?

Whatever you do, dont go and buy a cheap ass carpet kit. If you do, the year off your car wont matter because its gonna look like ass anyway. Just my 2 cents. Good luck, Brian.

Thanks Brian, I inheritted a cheap set with the car and you're right.... it looks like crap. Any reccomendations for where to buy a decent setup? (not museum quality, but better than the TMI set I have)

In my opinion, I would go for the Sewfine carpet kit. Its a little more than TMI but it fits way better. Ive installed both. The Sewfine fits way better all the holes for the heater outlets, shifter, and e-brake all lines up without any problems.
