Title: Headers
Post by: berliner on December 16, 2007, 03:42:45 PM
i bought a set of headers from airspeed before the unfortunate closing, but i didn't ask how to put the pieces together.how are the  joints sealed without making them look like hell.the pipes have expanded ends so one fits inside the other.thanks in advance.....mike

i used a little muffler cement and a gentle taptaptap with a rubber hammer when putting together my header & j tubes. works well with no exhaust leaks and looks allright...

available at your local crappy tire, lordo, etc....

I've heard of guys dipping the ends in wheel bearing grease and then slipping them together. Once it's heat cycled it hardens up and seals the joint.
 Never tried it myself though.

I just redid mine and used the orange Hi heat silicone to eradicate any exhaust leaks.

I've been down this road before, first with a 1 3/4\" S&S, then with an Airspeed 1 1/2\".

Not saying you will have leaks with yours at first but after a couple re&re's, no doubt.

I tried the orange high temp silicone and that didn't really work for me, ended up slicing the swedged end in 1/4's with a hack saw only about 1 1/4\" and wrapping a stainless t-bolt clamp (turbo induction style) around to pinch it together....that works pretty good.

If I did it again i'd take the header to a muffler shop and slightly expand the inner tube to make the joint tighter.

Gary!
Check the instructions that came with your Innovate AFR system. It will say that you are NOT supposed to use silicone, as it messes up the O2 sensor.

I ended up doing what Josh did, with some U type exhaust clamps from Canadian Tire.

would work well if you never wanted to take them off.
