Just got off the phone with ICBC and am picking a cheque up this afternoon.
It's not what I wanted but hey it never is....I get to keep the car though.
TO ALL THAT HAVE SUNK MORE THAN $5000 INTO \"MODIFICATIONS\" ABOVE AND BEYOND A STOCK CONDITION DRIVER YOU NEED MODIFIED INSURANCE TO COVER YOUR ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry for yelling
I had mine insured what I thought was full coverage (told autoplan I wanted everything), collision, comprehensive, 2 gasizillion liability yada yada and thought that was good. But low and behold I write it off and I don't have it insured properly. You the consumer is suppose to know that anytime you invest over 5G into modifications no mate what kinda car it it is could be a fancy ricer with body kit and aftermarket turbo or a huge done up 4x4. They want you to pay an extra premium to cover your non off the lot stock car.
What happened in my case was a private appraiser was brought in to determine what a 57 in stock form in the shape my car was in was worth and then the maximum of 5000 was added to that to determine my settlement.
Now if I was aware that I needed special coverage I would have paid the premium without a doubt and the appraisal would have me covered to aroud the 25000 mark
ICBC tells me I can go after the autoplan agent for not insuring me properly especially seeing as I told them I wanted full coverage and had the car outside the insurance office on the flat deck and the lady came out to check the vi # and comented on how it was sooooo nice and didn't look like a stock beetle. I even told her the previous owner had over 30K into the restoration/build of it. If persued, I would have to get a laywer and all that hassel of court etc. and no-one but the laywers benifits from all that crap, I don't really think I have the energy for that.
SO AGAIN IF YOU OWN A CAR THAT FITS THIS BILL, PAY THE $150 FOR AN APPRAISAL THEN GO AND TALK TO YOUR INSURANCE PROVIDER AND GET THE EXTRA COVERAGE, TRUST ME IT'S WORTH IT!!!!!!
To top it all off ICBC tells me my car can only be used as salvage and the VIN #'s are now taken out of the system and even if fixed will never be able to be insured again
Soooooo either I clip it and sell as a race car or cut it up verrrrry carefully and sell all the extremely solid OE metal.
-
Dude........
That sucks so much and now it really has me thinking about my car thats sitting outside... Guess I'm going to have to pay the extra(Like ICBC really needs it) since I have a modified vehicle....

This seems a little harsh. You would think that if they let you keep the car that it could be fixable. Sometimes it just is what it is with these people. (ICBC) :(

I think if you fix it it may be able to re-register in the state where you bought it from. ICBC (The government BIG Brother) would never know.

I really don't want to cut it up, if I find a good clip with papers then that'd be the ultimate.
I thought you would like the john force glove box back, it's a cool keepsake. I couldn't think of charging you anything for it tho, PM me your address again and i'll get it back to you :D

Josh sorry to hear you did not get what you were looking for.
I really didn't make out too badly, it could have been much worse, I actually got a hot rod/ drag race fan for an estimator and he was really good and fair to me considering I didn't have proper coverage

Does BC require out of province inspections on vintage vehicles? If not I just might know a guy that has a VIN or 2 kicking around of that vintage. ;)

Sucks to be you guys. Thats the ONLY good thing about our gov't insurance here. No inspection on vintage vehicles no matter where they come from (unless it's been TL'd of course).

imho, i would not go to canadian tire for a vehicle inspection (and anything else for that matter).
there are many other reputable shops that can do a proper oop vehicle inspection. if you need help finding one, ask me or post up here & the friendly folks on the asf will point you in the right direction.
-
trust me cambodian tire definately wasn't my first choice when I had it done just before the great canadian, everywhere I phoned in victoria either hated vw's and wouldn't touch it or were booked for a week or two. I use to work there in highschool as a grease monkey and happened to get one of the old guys that I worked with wayback when, he was cool with me hanging over his shoulder the whole process in the shop and I even got a free headlight alignment out of it.

Sometimes ignorance is a plus.

not in the case of a vintage acvw, an oop inspection, and canadian tire.

I wouldn't let it outta my sight, coached him in the parking lot how to start it and drive 10 feet into the stall and then made sure I hovered in the shop, answering any questions that came up. It's not like they were working on it, just checked the lights horn and took off one wheel to look at the brakes.
Trust me I use to see the gong show workmanship there, I would never take a car to them to repair

If you reclip the car you can get a BC Assigned vin and re-register the car that way. Ive done it lots of times.
