Title: Case Clearancing For 84 Mm Crank
Post by: neil68 on September 04, 2007, 07:31:07 PM
Alan, or any others running 2332 cc type 1's:

In your current engine, are you using a crankshaft with VW journals or chevy size?

I'm looking at increasing my displacement to 2332, but would prefer to re-use my current 5.5\" H-beam rods (to stay within a reasonable budget).  However, these rods have VW-sized journals, which would probably require some extra clearancing inside the case...I'm currently using a recent Brazilian mag case (three years old).

Thanks!

Neil :)

Neil, Alan is using a Chev journal crank.
VW journals can be made to work, but it gets very very close.  What rod bolts do your rods have, 5/16\" or 3/8\"?  Who's rods are they?

Hi Bruce,

I currently have CB Performance H-beams with 5/16\" ARP 2000 bolts (didn't feel the need for 3/8\" bolts with my current 2017 motor and only 131 HP at the wheels).

I may go with either 2175 or 2276 displacement for winter motor upgrade, if the 84 crank is not in the cards...

Thanks,

Neil.

my 2276 has vw journals, and it got quite thin in the roof of the case, i would imagine that an 84 would be really close. imho i think the best thing to do is save up a bit more and buy an 84 with chev journals and get some scat h-beams to match...

The rods you have may work with an 84 stroke VW journal crank.  If you had 3/8\" bolts, they would not fit.  I know that 5/16\" rod bolts in Eagle rods on an 84 stroke VW journal crank can be made to fit.  Whether the CB rods are the same as Eagle is unknown to me.

btw, my 2275 has the 3/8 bolts

2332cc scat H beam 3/8\" bolts, 84mm DMS welded crank with chev (actually buick) rod journals. My case was done by rimco, I honestly didn't look at how close (thin) the clearancing was.

If your case is on it's last legs you could always go to a cb \"raised roof\" alum case to gain some room.

Josh,

That's my dilemma.  My mag case is only three years old, with fairly low mileage, tight lifter bores, standard mains, bluerprinted matching oil pump, the whole package is there and I could use slip-in 94's (90.5 case bore).

However, I can also get a raised-roof aluminum case for $600 CDN that's already cut for 94's and then pretty much drop in an 84 crank.

Thanks for the suggestions...

Neil.

Thanks for the input.  I placed my order today with Concept 1 for an 84 mm crankshaft with chevy journals and 5.5\" rods, so I'll go with a 2332 cc for next season.

It looks like the amount of clearancing that I've already done on the case for the current 78.4 x VW journal rods, will only require a bit more work to make the 84 x Chevy journal rods fit.

Also toying with replacing the current FK8 with an FK 10...

I tried a K10 over a K8 a few years ago on a 2275 with no other changes and if I were you I would stick with the K8

Chow,
but he's going up in displacement from a 2017 to 2332 so would that benifit from more cam? not that i'm questioning a real engine builder.........just wondering B)

We have one or two more Friday-night street legal races here in Calgary and then I'm going to send my heads and manifolds to K-roc for some work.  The heads are \"out-of-the-box\" CB 044 CNC oval-ports and the manifolds probably need some porting as well.

I will stay with the FK8 for now and then perhaps experiment with other cams later, if necessary.  The FK8 is so nice for street driving, so that is certainly a plus :)
