Title: Blow It Up!
Post by: Hansk on July 23, 2007, 07:42:48 PM
Anyone else see Art Thraen and his 12 sec bug against a Chevelle on speed channels Blow it up ? All the other guys on the show just could not believe the VW hung in there till the end and actually was the slightly quicker car. Art did an awesome job.

was this the event that art & jake raby participated in? i've got ghetto cable so i dont have speed channel, but i have been sort of following it on the cal-look forum.

on a semi-related note, i just picked up the august 07 edition of hot rod magazine and there is a huge spread (10 pages) on acvw's written by stephan szantai. great read with lots of interesting info and some great pics. geoff is mentioned in the article and there is a pic of the heb-rod too.

definately a collectors item and worth picking up (plus it's got that crazy fire chicken from the 70's on the cover....the bandit!)

i also read on cal-look forum that stephan is coming out with a new book soon called \"demon bugs\" and that there will be some dvkk cars in it. good press for the club and the western canadian scene for sure!!

Cool, have to get that one.

I missed the beginning but there was mention of a spyder who's clutch gave out.....Jake?
The show focused on the vw versus the chevelle , the idea being that the two cars run down the drag strip again and again without ever stopping or even shutting them off until one of them blows up.  And the host plays with them by holding them in the burn out box for extra long burn outs and delaying the tree after the cars have staged and are on the rev limiters etc.   It's great

sounds about right. i believe muffler mike sheldon was driving the spyder for jake raby.

it started out as a type 4 powered spyder vs. a type 1 powered beetle.....until the spyder let go. the it sounds like it was beetle take on all comers. B)

Silas, are you saying that the Type 4 engine blew up where the Type 1 didn't?

not sure if it \"blew up\"....but apparently a bent valve ended it's day at the track.

i dont know how to direct link, but if you go to the cal-look/high performance forum and search for \"type 1 vs type 4\" the first thread that should pop up is \"too nice to blow up on purpose?\". that should fill you in with all the details. ;)

All but one couldn't believe it.
Ray Iddings is the executive producer of Blow it up and an avid VW racing enthusiast and also the host of a weekly online radio show called VolksCast Radio. It's on every Tuesday and he gets some pretty cool guests on telling their VW stories and stuff. Off the top of my head he's had Dave Cormack (Hot VW's), Jesse James (WCC). Walt Leatherman (designer and builder of the Rat Patrol), Steve Mathey (Volksrods.com) and lots of VW drag racers who's names I don't recognize on the show. Ray is also an active member over at Volksrods.com so he must be a pretty cool guy  :D  Here's a link to the radio show and archives: VolkCast Radio (http://www.richchristensen.com/radio/volkscast.php)

Bent valve = blowed up to me.
Man, I sure would like to rub his nose in it with all the Type 1 bashing he's done over the years.

Bruce,

I smiled when I read your post :D

I have never seen anyone spread so much misinformation about Type 1's, as that guy from GA...presumably so he can sell more Type 4's with his modified OPP fanshroud.

My German acquaintances just roar with laughter when they read about his Porsche fan shroud \"data\"... meanwhile they drive the hell out of their Beetles on the autobahn year after year with Porsche fan cooling!!

Neil.

His fan shroud data was good for comparing one shroud to the next, at a steady state operating condition.  Problem with his testing is that the real world is far from steady state.  His lack of formal education and his condecending attitude towards anyone who does is his downfall.
