Title: Putting New Latches On Ventwindows
Post by: kirin on February 14, 2004, 12:25:35 PM
Hey guys.
I'm wanting to replace the ventwindow latches on my 62 bug. Mine are currently toast... So what is the best way to do so? They are held on by rivets right so obviously grinding the heads off the rivets and then putting on the new latch and re-riveting...
Is it that striaght forword? Hopefully I didn't just answer my own question.

if you grind out the head of the rivet, you might damage something else.  I'd drill out the rivets so that nothing else can be grinded down :P

Kirin, how bad are they?  I am just right now rebuilding some vent windows and may be able to provide latch parts.
The problem with grinding off the rivets is finding the exact rivet to install new latches.  I couldn't find any so I made my own rivets out of stainless steel.  Sorry, no extras.

While we're talking vent windows, does anyone know how to adapt 56-64 vent windows to pre-55 doors?  I know it can be done because Terry's 54 has late vent windows (but he can't remember how)

I gave up on finding the \"correct\" rivits for my 74. I just used some stainless steel screws with acorn nuts. Not stock, but they look OK and di the job.

Hey Bruce.
Mine are pretty bad. They have about 1/8th of an inch play up and down and side to side. They won't \"tuck\" in the bottom of the window to make a good seal. Thats even with new door seals and new seals on the ventwindow post(Chrome thing that divides the ventwindow to the actual window)
So thats where I stand. If you could provide me with some stuff or help I'm more than willing to go far for that to happen. My cars not going to be 100% stock or 100% perfect. I just want to fix it right!:p

I just saw in the CIP catalog they have the upper rivet (C16-111-648).  That should take up some of the play.  What's wrong with the lower pivot?

not the pivot.. Its the actually latch that goes against the plate. Mine has 1/8th of play all around.. I have new rivets for the top part.
