Title: My House Smells Like Gas!
Post by: KOOL-AID MAN on February 20, 2007, 09:28:42 PM
Hey i was just wondering is it normal for a beetle to smell like gas? I never parked one inside a garage till now, and you can smell the gas in the laundry room, and almost in the kitchen. I checked all the gas hoses and tightened all the connections, could this smell be comming from the tanks ventilation hose maybe?.

Only if it has a full to the top tank or the gas caps off.

How's the line in the tunnel ?? Look in the morning for wet spots.

Any pilot lights in there ?  :!:  :!:

nope pilot light is in the basement, I do have a pretty full tank of gas, but the cap is on good.... hmmmm I'm pretty sure its not leaking gas out of the line in the tunnel, its always dry under the car and my car doesn't rush through the gas.

Mine was leaking from the bottom of the tank, check under the car for small puddle stains that would possibly evaporated gas, but I suggest you leave the car outside until you find it.

Well i just re inspected a couple things, It's definetly comming from the engine compartment, I jacked the car up and checked everything at the front, it all seems good, not much smell there. Then at the back its very gassy smelling by the carb, i checked the electric cut off, pulled it out turned the key on and grounded it, it sucked in so thats gotta be good.... Any other ideas? all the gas lines are brand new too.

well it could be anywhere, sometimes just runing your hands along the fuel lines until you hit a wet spot    you could have a hose with a soft spot or missing a clamp, or just flooded, single carb?

do yourself a favour and just replace all the fuel hose... it probably needs it anyhow, is it a stock fuel pump? or electric. how are the throttle shafts on the carb?ive found with old worn out carbs they leak there. also check the accel pump diaphram, sometimes they leak aswell.
