Title: Twisty Spring Plate
Post by: 72vwtype2 on February 19, 2007, 08:04:02 AM
I installed my split case tranny this weekened into my 58 bug. Everything seemed to bolt up nicely, except that the lower shock bolts needed a bit of persuasion and still seem a bit kinked. But the most surprising thing was the spring plates were twisted. This was evident when I stood directly behind one of them. I thought this problem might correct itself when I but weight on it by lowering the car onto it's wheels, but it didn't.

Does this mean the spring plate needs adjusting?

or

The tranny is not intalled properly?

or

Both?

Thanks.

As long as it was straight and flat before you bolted up the axle. Once bolt up it has to twist to follow the angle of the axle.

Thanks for the info guys.

I feel a little more comfortable now. The spring plate was straight and flat when there was no weight on it. I am planning to put the 36hp within two weeks and I anticipate that  this may help straightening it out more.
