Title: Case Polishing?
Post by: surgerypending on February 03, 2007, 04:14:58 PM
Well....I have nothing but time on my hands for the next 3-4 weeks and i'm bored to death. I'm limited with things I can do but I think I can sand and polish my new Mag case. What do you guys think....waste of time...magnesium will dull out eventually anyway....only a small part of the case is visable with the shroud on?

The baking temps required for powdercoating are high enough to adversly affect the strength of your case.  IOW, don't do it.  Maybe Russ will tell us the actual temp.

it would be baked at 400 degree's
in all honesty it would require so much taping and masking i'm not sure it would be cost effective.

Taping and masking...i'm real good at that stuff!
Is 400 degrees too much heat? Also would the engine run hotter if it's painted or powdercoated?

According to Uncle Gene, the temp at which you will compromise the strength of the case happens somewhere under 300

I dont see the benefit to powdercoating a case thats made of aluminum or magnesium, its never going to rust, it may corrode a little but nothing that is going to affect my piece of mind.
