Title: 1974 Vw Super - Need Advice
Post by: 72vwtype2 on January 12, 2007, 06:11:28 PM
I might be looking at a 74 VW Super Beetle.

What are things to look out for?

What are the pros and cons?

Apparently it has good floors and heater chanels. The rear quater is rusted.

What is a fair price range for a good condition Super?

Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks.

hard to tell price range without pics, but id say about 2k max if its got all the mechanicals figured out

its an old car, ask for maintenance recites to see if its been taken care of

pro-the suspension kicks ass, and i personally like the dash over other beetles

cons-not as collectible to most people as other older beetles

mechanical and electrical problems can be taken care of fairly easily. rust is your worst enemy.

thoroughly check the heater channels, pans (especially under the battery under the back seat), rear crossmember, lower inner front firewall and under the pedal cluster, bumper to body mounts front & back, lower fender wells on all corners (especially at the back near the end of the heater channel) and lower rear 1/4 panels.

check the front & rear aprons for damage due to a collision.

as for price, it really depends on the overall condition of the car. could be $500 or $5000.

supers are good cars. they handle well and drive well if the engine is tuned right.

good luck.
