Title: Where Is This?
Post by: Stephan Schmidt on January 28, 2004, 03:23:26 PM
these are some pictures I found of Will's car from the summer time.  he posted them on the samba.  He took a little drive before the show, and I like the look of that road.

my question is...does anyone know where this place is (redwood...in the states I'm guessing)?

is there any road like this in the lower mainland that makes for a nice sunny day cruise?

thanks a lot

Stephan

It's a logging road in Squamish by Alice lake. Coming up the highway heading to Whistler instead of making a right to go into the park you take a left and go down into back roads.

I went to the Redwood forest in Norcal when I was a kid...AWESOME.  I've got a pic next to the \"drive through tree\" somewhere.

Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island is verrry similar!

cathedral grove and the redwood forest are similar. however, the drive through redwood is long and winding and you can blast through cathedral grove in under 5 minutes (driving, that is).

i'm kinda pissed that the area is owned by mac-blo, probably the only good thing they've done in a long time. i have always thought that they have kept it around more as a \"look, we're good people by leaving these trees standing\" rather than \"we're are genuinely interested in preserving these old growth trees and the heritage of the land\". i hear they're going to cut a bunch of those old growth down make room for a larger parking lot for all the tourists.

Silas,
The sad thing is those old trees are dying. I heard on the news a month ago that a tree fell and killed someone in a car in there, while they were driving (not even a windy day)...like anything, trees only live so long.
The parking, IMO will be a good thing. I use to commute through there every day and with vehicles parked on both sides, people walking on and crossing the highway becomes a dangerous propositon. Not to mention the tourists in the waaaay too big moho BACKING out onto the highway...scary!!
WAAAY too many close calls!!
I would have liked to see it closed to parking all together. Have a parking lot at either end and people could walk in to admire the huge trees.

It was a fun blast through there in my bug though! And the shocked looks I would get passing people up the mountain into Alberni!! I kinda miss that! B)

Hwy 4 from Parksville to Tofino is a great drive. Lots of scenery, a mountain pass, and enough twisties to keep it fun! You'd be amazed how fast a '61 bus fully loaded with surf gear and running reduction boxes can get through the windy parts (only scared myself a few times!) Used to caravan with a buddy in his '81 Westy and me in the '61. He'd lose me on the straight sections but I always caught up or passed him on the hills or twisties. Good times... I need to get another bus...

i'm pretty sure that the couple, from the states, were driving through on a stormy night and decided to pull over and wait for the storm to pass, and the tree was blown over, and it landed on their car. a total freak occurance. it probably was dead, or dying, so you are right on there. i agree about the parking aswell. what a nightmare.

bill, that is probably the best drive in bc, imho.
