Title: Blarneymans Squareback
Post by: blarneyman on November 04, 2006, 10:02:00 PM
This is going to be a long term thread. I don't have a lot of time to spend working on it, so the progress will be slow. I've had the car for almost 2 years and about all I've done is strip it down.

This is what it looked like when I got it. Previous owner did a 4\" chop, louvered hood and a few other things

I started stripping it about 9 months ago.

Today I spent a good part of the day smoothing the dash.

Odd! The first 2 pix are one my blog (project). They came through when I posted it but now they don't. I'll have to send them to my photobucket and repost.

Had a good weekend so far. Had Friday off work so I spent the day breaking down a parts car. Today I cut the front off the parts car and my squareback, then welded the front from the parts car onto my car.

Can you tell where the replacement starts?

One from the front.

A little more grinding and a few touch up welds left for tomorrow.

Little update. I decided that if I wanted fresh air, I would open a window. Took out the fresh air boxes and cut the vents open and got a start on welding them over.

Decided to use the front fenders off my parts car. Welded over the trim holes, antena hole and welded the gas tank filler flap (not shown). I will be making a new filler neck for under the hood.

Spent some time on the car tonight. I didn't like the rear hatch lid the PO made, so I went to the stock lid from my parts car. Do to the way the car was chopped the stock lid didn't fit. I had to cut the top of the lid to match the line of the car.
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff296%2Fblarneyman%2FDSC_0349.jpg&hash=7b0fe6376bfe15ff59df9f301e6edd4649123c09)

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff296%2Fblarneyman%2FDSC_0347.jpg&hash=17e2b2920cd9b30b1a276cd288eac4b6b8ae7281)
Now the bottom of the lid is the next step. The top of the car is pulled forward about 14 degrees from the original lines of the car. The bottom tape line is going to be the bend. The top tape line is where the outer skin is going to be cut and removed from that point down. The frame will be cut in a wedge at the tape line to create the bend. At some point below the bend, I will have to cut a section out of the frame, due to the fact the car is 3/4\" shorter than stock. Then the skin goes back on.

Spent the last couple of evenings reconstructing the rear hatch. First we removed the outer skin from just below the window to the bottom of the hatch. Then we cut the frame at the bend in the body line. Next we cut the angle and removed almost one inch from the lower section. After that was all welded, we put the skin back on. We chose to put the cut high on the hatch so the license plate recessed area would be able to be used without modifications. Here are a few pics with the skin just tacked in place. The rest of the welding will happen today (hopefully). I am going to spend some time replacing the torsion arm bushings first, so I can get the car back on the wheels.

Haven't worked on the square for this past week but here are the last pics of what has been done.

This is just prior to finish welding (it's done now). The release button is welded over as well. I'm putting in interior cable releases front and rear.

It's been quite a while since I've had a chance to do anything on my car, but, I had a long weekend this week and got busy.

Started with the rear hatch release. I fabricated in a hood release so I could open it from inside the car.
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff296%2Fblarneyman%2FDSC_2098.jpg&hash=a307ab2c2fe2364056b5f93b1577cd499b7ab982)

Then I built a pair of seat brackets for my racing seats.

I started on the front of the \"bed\" area. (since this will be a \"delivery\" type)
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff296%2Fblarneyman%2FDSC_2091.jpg&hash=fc3b5071f85d475f3dfab507ae633271c0496e08)

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff296%2Fblarneyman%2FDSC_2097.jpg&hash=21847574e1b9abee57ec255ab250fa52850610b7)
The front of the bed will have 2 removable panels (one on each side) for access to the battery and other electronics. The removable panels will also hold the speakers for the stereo. I have decided to put the stereo in the center of the bed front (in order to keep the dash clean)

I have come to a turning point in the resto of the squareback.

Due to the purchase of a Ghia (that needs some work, but is driveable), I have decided to put the squareback in the barn for a while. After the Ghia is complete I will bring the squareback out of storage and finish what I started. This thread might expire before I get back on it.
