Ready Too Burn!
« on: May 28, 2006, 06:43:52 AM »
Problem started last fall with carb and intake iceing up...Cleaned out the cross over tube and drilled out header..Put back together and the intake still ices up runs some what better but form a dead stop there is no get up the motor seems too be starving for fuel I put a kit in the carb and checked all the vacuum lines no change..If you hold your foot on the throttle at a light its fine but from a dead stop it bogs down..When cruising at normal speed the little monster runs great.Lots of power..thinking carb may have been past rebuilding need new...Got the match ready..Help..Dan

Not DVKK but you didn't mention what carb and distributor you have.
From the way it's acting it sounds like a 009.

also not DVKK but.....
I've found the best way to limit icing is to get lots of hot air to the carb. Either the stock air cleaner with stock hot air set up or..... get creative.

With the engine shut off peer down the carb and look at the brass colored upside down U shaped thingy and see if it shoots out a squirt of gas when you open the throttle. also make sure it's aimed right at the rear end of the throttle butterfly where it first starts to open.
If it was behaving before and it isn't now there's a chance it's plugged up with sh*t.

If you have no vacuum advance you most likley have a 009 distributor which are notorious for a low end flat spot without massive throttle movements.

Your right Hans, carb heat is very helpful when it's cool and moist or even a warm day with lots of humidity but it does rob power and fuel economy, warm air has less oxygen molecules per cubic foot than cold air.

If you leave it warming up on a cool wet day and it runs slower and slower and starts to make some black smoke before it quits it's icing. If it does it every day without the black smoke (warm ones too) even after it's really warmed up and your manifold preheat pipe is too hot to touch on one end like it's supposed to be it's most likley sh*t in the carb.

Iv'e had the carb heat turned off on the 71 bus since the end of march and other than a couple of mornings before it's warmed up it has not been an issue.

If it used to run decent and doesn't now it's most likley the accelerator pump. The fix for the 009 is a distributor with a vacuum advance on it. but your issue sounds more like no squirt or not enough, check the little arm on the generator side of the throttle shaft and make sure the tiny bolt is tight and sorta in the middle of it's oblong hole.

While you are in there take off the distributor cap and give the rotor a twist, it should move about 3/4 inch and spring back to where it started niceley, if it doesn't suspect the distributor too.
