A-arm Front End ?
« on: January 25, 2004, 09:32:14 PM »
I've always thought about ditching the torsion bar/trailing arm front suspension and building a proper racing geometry front suspension.
Well here's a guy in Engalnd that did just that. It's a great idea, and shows how simple
it could be to build your own. Unfortunately he's abandoned this project which he was thinking of marketing, in favour of building a kit car.

It sure would improve the handling on the lightweight Type 1 front end, having proper camber compensation in the corners.
You could also design it to use some spindles from a larger vehicle which has some nice beefy ventilated rotors and 4 piston calipers.
Then add a nice R&P steering setup, and you have just improved on three weakness of the Type1 front end.
The tough part would be figuring out all the geometry - bump steer, ackermann steering, camber & caster.

..... well I can dream, can't I ???

Check out VolksRods , lots of alternate front end ideas going on there. If you have questions to post, make sure you do a search on the topic first and include a short introduction with your question. You will find a lot of help there if you go about it the right way!

***WARNING***
Link not for the faint of heart or hard core VW purists! Many VW's have been sacrificed to the VolksRod God there!!!!
