Fender fiasco
« on: August 08, 2011, 04:44:41 PM »
Okay so I'm at the end of my chain on this one. I just procured a true
German 1962 drivers side rear fender and while its nicer then the
repop (in the sense the bumper bracket and over rider holes are
better) it doesn't have the same flare and the metal around where the
running board mounts up is identical to the passenger side. Which
means its about a half inch of material as opposed to the right sides
1 inch. Plus the flare kick out is totally different....

So what year fenders do I actually have? Heres a photo that
illustrates the different in flare... I'm sick of dealing with this
and now thinking I should of just bought a matching pair....

First off the repop fender on the pass side has the universal tail light mount holes. (one extra hole) Have you tried your tail light housing on and will it cover the upper hole?

Car is looking nice!

Yeah the tail light does cover it. However I thought the left side was the repop? Simply due to the not so round over rider tube hole and not so nice bumper bracket hole, and nasty rolled edge?

most Orig fenders will have the corners welded at the fold point in the rear and maybe in the front as well. So many repo fenders have been made you could have two different types.
When I started at CIP in 91 we had to be very careful when we sold fenders in pairs as many came from different suppliers. Bumper holes would be different from side to side and front horn grills could be out by 2"

So it sounds like maybe I'm better off finding a pair of rears.... I had a lead on a nice clean set of 62's but I cheaped out and only got the one bang head..... Well if thats the only way it will be..

I'm considering maybe just buying a pair of repops. Any thoughts on that?

Use the ones you have until you find some good used genuine VW fenders.  There's a swap meet coming up at the end of the month.
