If you can't find a class, start looking for some instructional books on-line. Once you learn the basics about aperture, shutter speeds, film speed and a few others, you just start playing with settings on your camera. I've learned a ton of stuff in the past 2 years just by playing with the settings. I am currently shooting most of my pics in the A mode (you set the aperture and the camera does the rest, for the most part).

I shot this one in Edinburgh, Scotland this past spring. I locked the film speed at 200. Due to the brightness of the day the shutter speed was up around 1/5000 sec. (check out the end of the barrel)
