Air Biscut And Speed E
« on: August 23, 2003, 01:38:28 PM »
We just spent the morning removing the aprons and spare tire are from the \"Air Biscut\". We then hooked it up to the winch and made a few pulls to bring the nose back into shape. All is looking good with the alignment of the hood and fenders.

The Speed E Delivery van will be back to the shop today so i can start going on all the body work and everything else it needs.  NEW PIC's Added

Here is a shot of the bus after some rust removal

Here is the lower drivers rocker, The previous owner had someone do bodywork on the bus (this guy is in Surry watch out!) The new rocker was glued and welded over the old one without removing the rust! Nice Job!

Here you can see i have pulled the rocker off to find how bad the rust is, You can see the frame is still perfect as is the outriggers and frame supports.

Here you can see the \"repair\" that was done on the rear 1/4 - fender. If you look closely you can see the spot welds where  the panel was attached.

This is what was under it!!!!! not much, looks like i'll be doing a little work here.

Here are a few pics of the biscut with the nose repair started.

Here she is before we removed the apron, As you can see it was hit hard enough that the pass front 1/4 has a large crease and is kinked. The nose was pushed back about 1.5 inches.

Here you can see some of the wrinkles in the inner fender

Here the spot welds have been drilled out and the apron removed, lots o rust in the spare tire well. We will replace the apron and lower well area.

Here you can see that we used a home made puller, dont laugh it worked. We straped down the body and used the winch to pull the nose as we hammer and dollied the kinks out. The end result was better than we thought and all fenders and hood lined up nice!

More pics to come.

Here are a few more shots of  Speed E, Spent last night doing a little paint and rust removal.  The pic below shows using a flat razor blade to remove the old paint. This paint job looks to be the second that has been done or so it appears. The van was primered at one time in a brown color and then there looks to be a green metalic? maybe it was used as a guide coat? The Neptune blue was then applied over the green.

The flat blade while it remains sharp is a great way to remove the old paint. It's a little soar on the fingers but makes quick work of it.

This is aprox 1 hr later, my fingers are raw and i'm only half way thru the center of the roof.

Next i moved onto drilling out the spot welds on the inner rocker. To get at these i'm drilling down from inside the cargo area. the holes will be filled with weld when the new panel is instaled.

Rust rust rust!!!!!! the underneath sure looked good, well it's not as bad as it looks. The rust is only on the inner and outer rocker. The outrigger you see that looks rusty is only where the undercoating came off after being painted. It is all solid and will be cleaned and repainted when the rockers are instaled.

Here you can get a good idea of the extent of the rust that was hidden, the removal will take some time as there are lots of hard to get to spot welds.

Details, well some things are still up in the air (drive train). The bus will have line loc, Slicks mounted on satin centerlines for the track. Street wheels may be a set of 16' phone dials but i'm not set on those yet.

There are a few motor and trans combos im thinking of, 1835cc with small turbo and beetle irs trans with ZF limited slip diff. 2.7 911 motor with stock 002 or 091 bus trans...........or just a hell bent 2275cc with IDA's. This will all depend on the next few swap meet deals i can find. I'm off to Sacramento this weekend for Bug o ramma, maybe i can find some good starting point there.

I kinda like the 2.7L 911 motor but want to stay VW power...............no T4  power so dont even say it.

whoa boy  easy there............

It depends what you are expecting from a motor.  Obviously you weren't expecting more than 75 miles from yours, who is the disapointed one????

Geoff there is a 911 at mikes autowrecking now,   motor and tranny both in the car.  Front end of car was in a fire.    motor and tranny look fine

Hmmm...

I smell a showdown...the Speed E vs. Barry's Carrera Vanagon?

Two generations of VW Busses powered by Porsche...head to head?!?

Don't want to miss that Geoff!

Great pictures and play by play action on the repairs...looking forward to more.
