I'm pretty sure it's a repro.

One of those badges is a must for your 58.

Anyone know what years they were used?  I have only seen them on 58s and 59s.  Did eastern cars get them too?

I've seen one on a 57 from the island...

Why do it once when you can do it thrice?

how can you tell? iirc, there should be the name of the manufacturer stamped in between the 2 lines above the word volks. i cant remember the name of the manufacturer tho.

I copied the guy's pic then scaled it to full size on my screen.  Then I held an original one over top.  The lines that form the V&W in the logo are a lot thinner in the pic.  Also, repros I have held in my hand were like this.  The quality of the repros is really bad.

Above the V & O, are the words "ARISTO-CAST WINNIPEG" on the originals.

There's an interesting story about this badge.  20+ years ago, members of the Vintage VW club of Canada went to Aristo-Cast in Winnipeg to ask if they could make them again.  So new badges were made.  This begs the question, are badges made in the 80s by the original co using the original mould considered repro?

Note: the repro like in the eBay auction is not an Aristo-Cast badge, but the badly made repro.

Found this on a 60 standard from Quebec:

Here's a better pic from The Samba:

This one's also a repro.  Note the gimped left half of the "W".

Compare to this original one:

I was in Edmonton with Rick Herity when we approached the aristocrat people, had them make I think it was 100 of them from the original mold and then were told that the mold was destroyed. Since then, i've heard various versions about how the company did more batches, either from the original mold or from one re-made. I know I had two old ones from that batch in the late 70's, Jason got one after I sold my split, and I still have one put away.

That Ebay one looks to be a fake. If it doesn't have the Aristo-cast in it, then it's defineatly a fake.
My 53 barndoor has one, and so does my 56 oval. I believe they were used up 'til the very early 60's, as I have seen a couple original paint cars around here with them. I think pretty much all dealers in Canada had these avavilable for install. Kinda like the VOLKSWAGEN stenciling that was painted onto the rear hatchs of early Types 2 for brand identification in the early years.

Yep, had a look at mine and see the Aristo Cast Winnipeg on it, but noticed that on mine some of the letters have some leftovers from the casting. I see it on the top of the K and S, as well as the W and the A where there's no gap. Here's mine, pulled it out of an envelope from 1986, but thought they were done earlier than that.

Brian, is that your "repro"?   ;)     I wouldn't mind taking a look at it.

I just received a reply from the eBay seller in France.  He doesn't know if it says "Aristo-Cast" because he doesn't have it.  Sounds fishy to me.

You shouldn't ask that way.  It would be very easy for a seller to just say, "yes".  However, if you ask if there is any lettering above the V and O, now it's way harder to lie.
Been burned a couple of times that way.

I remember Bill Dierickx relating how he got burned on an original 3 fold split that he bought in Europe.  He specifically asked the seller to measure the length of the sunroof and the guy came back with the correct length for a 3 fold.  Car arrives with a fucking 2 fold grafted in.

Just keep up a diligent search.  They come up from time to time.  Last fall I scored an NOS one on eBay for about $60, and the bonus was that the seller was in Canada.  Wuhoo, no 13% tax!.

off topic answer.. thelovebug.net is the url for herbie's heroes which i'm the founder of and started after disney and make a wish asked me to do the make a wish anniversary at disneyland two years ago. i had the pleasure of meeting many lil heroes, with most streight and courage then most of us will ever have, I had the good luck of spending time with ms Linda Pauling the founder of make a wish, and she talk me of chris, he son and the first make a wish kid.. the stong young trooper who started it all, and who was a herbie fan. we'll from then on what else better to do with herbie eh?, i was asked to do the MAW gig after disney used my monte carlo herbie for the 50th commercial via cgi by digital doman, and they used it for the 50th at disneyland, where it drove in to the castle to julie andrews with goofy and mickey (the finish of the commercial).any payment from any gig I do if payment is required is made out to make a wish .. I take no want to see any of it, as too many charitys want, but then deduct their costs, if you do something for someone or thing, they should get all of it..
we did the world premire, my step daughtry is in a couple of shots with lindsey. I helped with the constuction and was a consultan to randy white  pictures car captain and builder boss for the 38 cars used in the film. if you want to know anything about herbie go to www.lovebugfans.com those are my friends and people with real and replica all around the world, and we try to be kid safe at all time.. kool1

I would be happy to post my HFL shots on here if anyone would like to see, so long as they are not copied to other uses..
