OIL DEEP SUMP installation?
« on: September 21, 2008, 11:12:00 AM »

I have this deep sump and was looking into how the extension tube is intalled?

Can it be installed with the engine on the car?

Yes.
Glue it on with RTV, then put a hose clamp onto it.

couple of points .
depending on the lower sump plate the drain bolt may hit dead centre and block your oil extension, you will need to trim the drain bolt or measure and move the oil extension up higher .
bevel opens to back of car with the tip of the extension min 1/2 " from the bottom 3/4" max.
best way to put the extension on is of course to weld it.
if its in the car make sure the extension is a tight /correct fit onto the original oil pickup,if so cut a 1/2" slot on the end going up onto the original oil pickup tube .this way when you clamp it with a hose clamp it will allow it to compress and grip .i would not use rtv there i would recomend depending on the fit if using the clamp on meathod ,loctite green or jb weld ,you will only need a thin film around the original pickup tube.
remember put the loctite or jb weld around  the original oil  pickup that way when you slide the extension up it will push out any extra.
let it dry 24 hrs, then accelerate

That is a Samba picture that is somewhat like the one i have. I used it because my main concern is the addition to the pipe.

The first time I met Gary in the 80s, he told about a few of the details on the sump.  Notice how the top surface has a small step at each corner?  This is to clear the factory ears that the lower cylinder sled tins screw to.  He gave it only a small amount of clearance so that if the sump hit anything, it would only deflect a small amount, then the case would take the load.  He also designed the sump to be as close as possible to the case to maximize ground clearance.
I ran a Lang sump for many years, and even though I hit it a few times, it never gave me troubles.  I can't say the same for the boat anchor Berg sump on my engine now.

I have a fair amount of Lang stuff in my collection including a set of NOS 36hp valve covers, decal, and a 13-1600 sump.  Very cool stuff with local history!

OK so it may be  a good sump, How do I get a tube that I can use and any hints about prepping it and intalling it?

i think this has been covered .

is there a problem with the tube fitting you will need to measure th O.D of the pickup on your motor now .then the I/D of the new pickup
