69 Beetle 80's style Beetle
« on: October 11, 2014, 08:17:33 AM »
I picked up my new ride yesterday from my high school bubby who got hold of me a couple months ago to see if would be interested owning the car. His Grandpa bought it new from Speedway and gave it to him in 81 with 69000 miles on it (now has 118,000 miles). He got the car and built for the look that was cool for the early 80's. He ran the car until 88 when he put it away and only brought it out for a couple of summers. It had not been driven for 5 years until yesterday when the battery was charged and fresh gas in and I drove it home from Victoria where it spent it's life. The car is all original German steel except for the engine lid was replaced with one from 72 for better cooling. Beside being de-chromed and being sprayed 34 years ago the body and pan are extremely solid. For me it is like a time capsule as I remember cruising around in this car in high school. My plan is leave the car alone as much as possible but for now just go over the mechanical end of things to make it safe for driving.

Nice story Thomas, great to have that connection to the car, and something you can drive with less worry than your sunroof!

While cleaning the car out today I noticed the writing under the trunk mat today. Is this from the factory and if so what is it about. Thanks Thomas

My plan is leave the car alone as much as possible but for now just go over the mechanical end of things to make it safe for driving.

Well I have had the car a month and have manage to get most of the parts I need to do to get it back on the road. It's been interesting working on the car as most of it has not been touched but at the same time it amazing how all the rubber parts are shot. I'm trying hard to leave the car alone but to just replace the parts that need fixing. The only thing that I will replace are the front seats as the Scirocco seats that were in the car are in bad shape. I found some mid 90's GTI seats and had Kevin fix up some stitching on them. Now I just have to transfer the VW base over. Hoping to have it on the road in time for the Classic gathering in a couple weeks as I can't wait to put some miles on this car.

Well I have finished the interior and most of mechanical. I have got most of the bad seals replaced and have started working on the paint touch up. The biggest problem is the car was cleared back in the day which makes it hard to match up. Had it out on the road a couple times now and seems to run good for sitting for so long.
