Title: Need some window regulator help!
Post by: HaggardRob on July 25, 2011, 10:38:15 PM
I think the passenger side window regulator just went on my '64 beetle. It has brand new window seals, and it rolled up and down fine. I put new door panels on it and it became hard to roll up and down, and just on sunday when my girlfriend was rolling the window up something snapped (?!) and the crank spun freely. I took the door panel off today to check it out and the cresent shaped gear thinger was sitting at the bottom of the door not attached to anything and there was a largish washer with two pin things in it down there too. I did some searching on the samba for how to fix it without anything too helpful.

If someone has a free night sometime this week (or sometime soon)  and has some experience fixing this kind of thing I would be glad to buy you a case of beer or give you some cash for your time. I can drive to you.

From my experience, it's likely a broken part that the whole unit will have to come out and be repaired (replaced) as there aren't really nuts and bolts that just come loose. This image is of a way older door, so not sure if there's similarities to yours?

Yessir, it be busted. Sorry to say, but will have to be replaced as far as I can tell. The crescent shaped gear is usually riveted on. You may be able to, maybe, drill out where it came from and replace the rivet with a bolt with a bushing on it, but it's probably not worth the effort.
Sorry for the bad luck. I'd come over, but I live in Penticton.

I think your going to have to take the regulator out, take a good look at whats gone wrong and post back. Taking it out isn't super difficult if I remember.
