Ya, airspeed can actually tell you what you need as opposed to a box store where the guy behind the desk is a \"chevy\" guy.

Right on the weight..
And well usually I ended up running 10w 30 in the winter and 20 w 50 in the summer. And for what brand? I've had good luck in my machine with castrol and pennzoil..
What works for me...

Use what you want. If it consumes oil with a 10w30 then step up to a 10w40. The 40 indicates that the oil should have the characteristics of a 40 weight oil at operating temperatures. So in theory its a tad thicker when hot.

Burning oil??? use a thicker oil like 15w40 or 20w50. When you buy an oil with \"w\" its rated good for cold winter starts.

More than likely a cheap crappy oil will not retain its rating. The viscosity modifier additives that makes an oil into a multi - grade may deteriorate quickly. Even if your 1600 is driven hard I hardly think you'll push the shear limits of the oil. So in my opinion Esso, superstore presidents choice, waltmart, penzoil, castrol, havoline......... it'll work well with a 1600.

If your really critical I'd say use Shells Rotella T 15w40, Delo, Petro canadas Duron, or any other oil rated for diesel for more zinc content.  Mobil 1 or Castol sytec are also very good motor oil for the price you pay. Mobil 1 is a sh!! mix of this and that - mixes of synthetic bases and Castrol is an excellent quality group 3 hydrocracked mineral oil with great oil additives.

It depends on $$$$ you wanna spend and how critical you are on oil specs.

Well I'm glad others use my practice.
Anyways Alan posted up some very good information. Basically for stock applications any oil works. I could only see synthetic possible being better for high performance application. And I know a local collector that has some very very nice cars and he uses Canuck tire brand oil..
I find my bug runs to hot on 10w-30 driven in summer.
Plus I drive it sometimes simply in pure anger :P

Its your imagination Kirin.  The viscosity of oil doesn't cause your engine to run hot.  The temp of your engine depends on how much hp you are making, and what the outside temps are.

My screw up.
Obviously the acvw engine is cooled by oil so the viscosity wouldn't make the engine run hot.. outside temperature.
My train of thought was.. A thicker oil viscosity once it got hot and \"thinned out\" would be as good at lubricating and cooling as a thinner weight oil when it was cold. Isn't that the reasoning why running a thinner weight viscosity of oil in winter so basically it warms up faster or doesn't have as much time to \"thin\" out?
Would really like to know the truth.... behind \"snake oil\" and myth

You aren't far off in your reasoning.
You need to pick an oil viscosity that flows well at your operating temp, but at the same time doesn't flow too well.  By this, if the oil is too thin it can't lubricate properly at high temps.  If the oil is too thick, it can't get into where it has to lubricate.  Right now, I recommend using 5W-30.  Since its viscosity is 5W, it will flow easily first thing in the morning, allowing good starts.  And since its also 30, you could still blast out to the 'wack at full speed if the temp got into the low 20sC.

The 5W is a measure of oil's flowability at 0

Oil temp gauge? I fitted one while in the other end of the temperature range in OZ, it helped with my paranoia if nothing else...did always wonder if it was working properly though!
