Beefed Up 68' Bus Trans?
« on: June 13, 2006, 02:26:39 AM »
Ok, so I'm an idiot. I know that I know nothing about my bus, but I'm really diggin it. I've owned tons of early busses, from green on green 56' kombi's to 61' 23 window to 67 Westys. But this 68' bay I just picked up has me wanting more...

So in having a pretty stout engine for it (2332 turbo), I know I'm going to need to beef up the transmission. What can I do? 930 CV's? 935 CV's? I know as far as clutch what I'm using, but for internals, what can be done to make it a little more stout? I know it will hit the strip once or twice just to see what it'll do. But 90% of the time, it'll be mild mannered romping around town.

Hell, I don't even know what box it has in it. 002? 091?

Thanks ya'll!  B)

Matt, I'm sorry to have to tell you, but the 68 only Bus gearbox is a major DUD.  The pinion bearing retainment was a disaster, such that in 69 the pinion bearing was again re-designed.  Rancho will not rebuild these gearboxes, only strip them for parts.

From 68 to 71, the Bus gearbox is called by some a 113 Bus 'box.  This is because the forward gears/syncros/hubs/bearings, etc are all the same as a Beetle.

Then from 72 to 75, VW was building what is known as a 002 Bus 'box.  The mainshaft was made thicker, and all the forward gears/sliders, etc. were upgraded to take the extra power of the newly installed Type 4 engine.

From 76 on, the 091 gearbox was built.  All the gears were made wider to be stronger.

If I were to build the ultimate Bus 'box, it would be at least a 002 'box with a 9 tooth mainshaft.  Or an 091.

You don't need to upgrade your CV joints.

Thank you Bruce! That was very informative. I was thinking about upgrading CV's because of taking it out to the track every once and awhile.

Now I'm off looking for a later trans now.    Thanks again Bruce!

Matt, I base my recommendation that standard Bus CVs are really strong on what RichieUK is doing with them.  He's doing low 10s with his 2200lb cabrio.  He hasn't broken a CV yet.  I can't remember what brand of CV he is using though.

Cool thanks. Like I said, I'm an idiot with this late bus stuff and I appreciate any and all help. Looking for that late year trans now.
