Synthetic gear oil?
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:17:24 PM »
I'm planning on taking my 67 kombi(swing axle) on a long road trip. Ive read that using synthetic gear oil, 1 helps mpg plus may increase the life of the tranny! does any one have any words of wisdom on what oil would be preferable and/or whether i'm best sticking with standard grade and why?

I've used synth in all my used cars since blowing reverse in my mkIII golf. Synth is supposed to help spool up the synchros for smoother shifting. The old golf's at least shift a bit hard, especially when cold, and it seemed to help. Also put it in my RAV4 at 210k and it really helped. As far as extended life...? You probably will get more just from not grinding as much.

Thats my 2c

Thanx Guys, Its pricey stuff as im sure you all know. I dont want to just throw it in with little or no information of the results. Lower operating temps and smoother running, sounds like a worthy investment as i may be travelling up to around 6000 miles.

Any further input would be happily received.

Hi Chris. So Your telling me the the cheapest brand of oil will perform as well as the highest grade synthetic oil with the same rating?
I want to use an oil which has less chance of degrading/possibly causing catastrophic failure.
My journey will involve prolonged high way use in temperatures ranging from 10 to upper 30s.
Would like to give my engine/gearbox the easiest ride possible.
Not too keen on rebuilding in Alaska or in the Arizona desert.
