Jetting Woes
« on: August 15, 2005, 10:44:24 PM »
I have a 2165 cc type one and I have recently purchased 48 ida's. I have a engle 120 cam and 044 heads and I just cant seem to get it to run on acceleration well, it seem to idle well and smooth(it sounds awesome) and even reving it is good, its just in motion that when you put your foot into it it sputters. I have put on a new fuel pump that is supposed to have a built in regulator. I am at a loss. here is some of the jetting combo that I have tried. idle 120,    main 175,185,200     air145,155,180    Is there something that I am missing or do I not have the right combination yet. Thanks for the help, see you on the 21st.

WHat emulsion and vents?

Here is what I run on mine:

40Vent
200 Air
150 Main
60idle

WHat kinda port work?

Foot into sputtering kinda sounds like an intake leak

James is right, you need to provide more info about your setup. How about exhaust?  Did you rebuild the carbs or run them without cleaning them out thoroughly?

My idle circuits on one carb and enrichment on the other were plugged up with baked-in crap.  Had to completely dissassemble and clean out with pipecleaners, air, solvent, and finally vapour degrease.

Also make sure your float height is set correctly. Change to 2.5mm ball type if your needle/seat is pitted.

Lots of potential problems setting up IDA's for street cars, but they run and sound sweet once you do!

The exhaust that I have is a ceramic 1 5/8 and the emulsion tube is a f7 and the vent is a 37. If the fuel connection into the carb is not 100% sealed would that affect it in that way? also the carbs that I have a brand new.

Are your heads out of the box or have they been ported - if ported who did them and do you know any flow specs? What size valves?

What do you mean by not sealed on the fuel connection? if you mean from your hose to your banjo fitting is leaking then I would suggest fixing that ASAP as this could cause an engine fire as the fuel will be dripping right down on your spark plugs/heads.

I'd check your float bowl and needle seat are moving freely and aren't jammed in some way. Also rev it up while spraying wd40 around your manifold connections see if there is any change in rpm (bogging) if so you have a leak - fix it.

As far as jetting goes we'll still need more info on your setup to make an accurate suggestion - but if you look at my setup above on a smaller engine you can get a ballpark of what you might try. My heads are 044's with 42x37.5 valves P/P was done at CB performance they are not huge ports but flow real nice.

What is your idle jet?
What pump jet?
Have you checked your float level?

I had a problem like that quite a while ago with a set of Kads.  The accelerator pumps were not hooked up properly.  It would idle fine, and if the throttle was brought up with no load, it would sputter then smooth out.  If there was a load, it would sputter huge and no power at all.  It turned out the accelerator pumps were not adding enough fuel.  With the engine off (and cold) , look down the throats of the carbs as you open the throttle by hand.  You should see a squirt of fuel.
