Dual Side Cover Tranny

(1/1)

James Buchan:
Quick dumb question - A dual side cover tranny is a later model irs right? And if so can it be converted to swing? And what kind of gearing do they have?

Bruce:
All swing transmissions are dual side cover.  Right.....?  All dual side cover IRS transmissions can be converted to swing.
The vast majority of DSC IRS 'boxes are 4.12, but I have seen one 3.88.

James Buchan:
Would this be a good candidate for a close ratio box to be built with? Also is there any advantage to running short axles?

Bruce:
IMO, the best swing axle trans starts with a 71-73 double sidecover IRS.  That way you get the better guided throw-out bearing, and the bigger pinion bearing.  If your trans is an earlier IRS trans, its no better than the last swing axle trans.
The only advantage to short axles is fender clearance with the wheels and tires you want to run.
Theoretically, a longer axle (all other factors being equal) will wind up more than a short one.  If the axle winds up more, it will be absorbing more of the shock, and thus should be easier on the trans parts.

James Buchan:
Cool thanks for the info Bruce.
