Sorry, not sure if this is the right place?  I have an old engine 1328068, year?  no prefix letters.
OOPS found it, looks like Jan,1956.

I think I found out the answer to my 36hp year question
it might be a VW industrial engine made from June to July 1956

that was an interesting thesamba posting
I bought a VW powered ski hill tag line system 30 + years ago
it had a 36 hp. engine hooked up to a type 2 split case transaxle with one brake drum bolted to a solid arm on the mount.

I'm not sure if this "E" engine was the one or not that powered it- I have a few other 36 hp. engines
