Title: Tranny code
Post by: Big Shaver on April 08, 2014, 08:28:25 AM
I have a tranny from a 71 Standard Beetle with the code of AY 23 10 2. I cannot find technical information on the internet about this AY code. Any help?

On closer examination it appears that  the original factory stamp has been ground down and a AY was hand stamped. Did VW have a rebuild program for transmissions like they did for engines?

I don't know about the "AY" part. you might want to check that code out closer. Here is a link to a tranny code site.

Good Luck

Gordo!

You won't find any info on the AY trans.  I have looked for months and found nothing.  Even Bruce T.  was baffled.  Nothing out of the ordinary about the trans.  4.12  R&P and not much else.

I have seen that code before.  I just don't remember what the internal config was when I had one open.

Ah, the mists of time have clouded the memory.

Steve R. recently pulled the one (AY code) apart I was telling you about a few months ago.  4.12 r&p and nothing special so it was tossed.  They had a couple spares already.

I would have been interested if it was a 3.88 or 4.37.  I have an IRS with a similar configuration so if I need a swing I can put the swing super diff in that I have and go from there.
