After 14 years as my daily driver I've decided to give the beetle a full rebuild. Mother nature has taken a toll on the heater channels plus the front and rear aprons. Not sure what the car will look like when it's done as I may put it back to it's original colour. I will post pictures as I go as I figure it will take a couple years for me to complete.

Thomas,
It looks like a great place to start! I really like the factory color! Not too many Grey type 1's around. Any more pictures?
Stephan
-
So was this one originally the Java Green. Had one of those many years ago. As well as a Pearl White standard.
Just curious about the muffler too. Which one is it and how do you like it?
-
The original colour of this car was ruby red. The colour of the car now is anthercite gray a colour not available in 1965 so depending if I want to make it period correct or not on the colour choice. The muffler is from empi and I got it from CIP part #c13-3417 and I do like it as it uses the stock exits.

Day 2
Pan still looks very solid but heater channel areas are in need of replace for sure. Should have it all apart by weekend I hope.

Fattens ones are very nice billet tags, if you want the orig tin ones they are on the samba and eBay listed as nos but they are repop. Still nice though
-
Awwwwwwwwwwww,
I'm SOOOOOO excited to see this car get the "make-over" it deserves! :-*
It was my very first car and Russell brought it across from Bellingham for me and had it running in less than an hour if I remember correctly.
:1rij:
Can't wait to see it all happen Thomas,

Interior and wiring all gone - sure hope I can remember what to do when it's time to back in :o

Nice car...great year!
I have a 65 beetle L360-sea blue
trying to get this thing finished!!! ;D
-
Process has been slow due to Olympic Fever as you tell by my wife in photo...after spending all afternoon in Irish House :D
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi790.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fyy188%2FThomas1965_bucket%2F2010-2020.jpg&hash=15fd8c88c0d065367ef92e99d5b5438efd7e53e4)
Have managed to strip everything off pan and strip the rest off the body so the rebuilding is next step....or I should say the next step is convincing the wife this was a great idea.Hmmmmm may a shopping trip to California and a pergola for the backyard for her will make things go easier?

Well it's been a while since a update but then again not to much progress.Spent most of the summer tracking down parts and finishing up other projects. My last rack project for a customer went out the door on Sunday so the cutting up of the beetle started with what OG metal I could find. More to come soon I hope. Thomas

-

thanks good to be back
i have a list of parts i need to buy for it but will scrape some money

right on russ!! congrats on the new/old bug! :D
it'll be nice to see you back at 'er and in the drivers seat in no time!!
-
just scraping the undercoating off this thing before it heads out for blasting.
it truly sucks scraping this stuff off.
i would think by next weekend i should finish up, then arrange a time to get it to the blasters then epoxy.
long long long way to go but baby steps and i'll get there
-
it starts all over again, have fun and enjoy! ;)
-
Sorry about that, undercoating seemed like a good idea at the time. Heat gun, a scraper and beer works good ;D

Don't do it Russ... once you blast her there is no turning back :) put it together and slam a big motor in there and have fun...
-
don't i know it Gavin.
it's gotta be done but it certainly will be a budget build lol_hitting
-
well Tom the heat gun and scraper are working pretty good it's what i have been using.
as for undercoating it it's not a huge deal just need to get most off so the blaster can do his thing
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.thesamba.com%2Fvw%2Fgallery%2Fpix%2F776996.jpg&hash=c30ad2b514f2597bd72865be5dfe24720dc40c49)
-
What about the Beer? If you need help with the beer I can come over and drink it for you.
-
Forget the heat gun...Liquid Nitrogen!
Seriously. Spray the stuff, tap it with a hammer (lightly, you don't need to get aggressive) and it just shatters and falls to the floor.
-Dave
-
will there be pink valve covers this time around? ;D

well it seems I suck at updates.
a refresher as this is how it looked when I sold the cars 20 years ago (after jumping around it landed in thom's hands)

i love those wheels...different, custom and perfect fit...nice tire & stance combo and that colour pops...tan/chocolate interior will look awesome!! she's a beauty all the way around!!
-
I like it, the wheels totally give an old car a fresh look! Who did you get to dye your rubber mat?
-
thanks guys i am pretty happy with how it's turning out, the wheels are Porsche 944 spares with extra holes drilled in them
the outlaw guys are running them

i used RIT dye super hot water and let them soak for about 7 hours
multiple soaks still had the blotchiness
it may not be really noticeable when the chocolate carpet is in

Very nice job! Car looks Awesome!

Russ the car looks great. As much as I wish I still had the car it was the right choice to let it go to you. Just remember 1st dibs if you get tired of it!

Thanks Thom
I'm glad you let it go it has been a fun build so far.
if I ever let it go i'll be sure that you are the first to know about it

since headliner and carpet are being done I am doing a few things to the engine I bought
too many blue and red fittings and stainless lines.
first problem was the empi billet air cleaners, actually a nice piece but did not sit flat and hit the banjo fitting's
milled out a slot so they sit flat, also milled off the empi logo and had them polished.
countersunk the screw hole for allen head bolt and anodized them black.
what I ended up with is just a clean and simple air cleaner, all the stainless hose is being replaces with braided Kevlar.
as far as the screws holding the tops on, I know they have a tendency to vibrate loose I will try blue Loctite and hopefully they stay put

Your car is lookin great Russ!! Love those speaker enclosures can you make me a set :-) sweet JL Audio one of my first picks as well.
-
speaker design goes to my friend Brett who owns creationz, he has a way better eye for it.
I said I want them as slim as possible. the pic lightened it up everything is chocolate brown and blends in to the dark space
the sub is JL audio front speakers are alpine, no head unit just blue tooth through my phone for music.
if you really are interested i'll pass his number along to you
-
Russ Thanks.
He did a great Job. When I still lived in Canada I had a business installing Custom Stereo systems in Car's with a old friend, kind of a side job / Hobby we had.
His work Looks A1.
Just out of curiosity what did he use then for the blue tooth interface. JL Audio has a couple systems as do other makes.
But maybe pm me his contact info I'm still looking for a place to get my gear just not sure if it will fit in time wise for me to do the install this visit. Maybe I'll have to get him to help me with the job.
Compliments he does nice clean work.
Cheers Russ
-
it is a JL audio amp as well
I'm not really sure what model or anything, I kind of take his word on what is best for me
overall I am really happy with how it looks, should sound pretty good too
-
Good old Brett! Car looks sweet Russ!
-
nice clean install on those speakers!! tunes!!
-
my flash lit the speakers up but with them tucked down and it showed down there it's hard to tell they are there

nice! subtle add-ons to make cruising even more enjoyable!
will you & the 65 make it to the dubs in the barn show in april...?
-
i will be there for sure not sure about the car,
i have little things i need to finish first, along with installing the other engine.
when i bring it out i'd like it to be fully finished so well see.
i will say for right now i am enjoying just putting the last bits together for it, i really do hope to get out for some longer cruises in it when it's complete

got the alignment dialed in and took it for a rip, pretty happy with how it is turning out. I have just a few smaller things to do on the interior then when I get a chance the engine will go in
I have a few paint touch ups to do as well (the inside of the one door ect)
all in all not a killer show car but I'm pretty happy so far
