Mission Raceway Street Legal Tech Questions
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:11:15 PM »
Bringing my '68 Beetle out from Calgary for the GCVWS and the Friday night street legals at Mission.  I have a couple questions regarding potential tech issues at the track:

Beetle chassis is stock, except for:

Front: dropped spindles & camber shims on lower beam.
Rear:  engine support bar (Berg) and intermediate tranny mount (Mohr Performance).

Inside, have an RLR 5-point roll bar, and I currently wear a 5-way RCI race harness hooked into the stock door post (bottom) and tunnel seat belts holes.  The two shoulder straps are looped over the lower roll bar, over a stock '66 low back seat.  I currently don't use the crotch strap...should I bolt this to the floor pan?  My understanding is that since I only run low-13's with the odd high 12, the roll bar/belt issue is moot...at least until 11's, or thereabouts.

I have all braided stainless fuel lines, except for a short rubber section alongside the frame horn (rubber fuel line is limited at the Alberta tracks to 15").  Fuel filter is not plastic or glass, so that should be good to go.

I have a "Annual Tech Inspection" card at Race City (Calgary) and have always passed tech at Castrol Raceway (Edmonton), but realize that each track has it's own local tech "rules".  Given the long trip from Calgary, I'd hate to get to Mission and flunk the tech inspection!!

Thanks.
Neil

Sounds like you will be fine, however even though you have equipment you dont require based on your e.t. your equipment will still be inspected as it is required to be. Belt and helmet must be current, valid insurance, and what not.

Thanks for the link, Chris.  A couple more questions after reading the rules:

Is stock VW battery location under the back seat still acceptable?

Is MSD ignition box under back seat okay (bolted to floor on MDS rubber cushions)?

Can I race without front passenger seat installed (saves a few pounds)?

-- yes you are not relocating so its ok ,but keep your back seat in till after tech if its not a sealed type
Is MSD ignition box under back seat okay (bolted to floor on MDS rubber cushions)?
-- yep--

-- yep--

as chris was saying , any safety item you install must be correct .if you have a rollbar even if you run 15's you need padding and a helmet .
crotch strap . i would say you run 13.2 and they will let you pass even with a outdated belt

Thanks, Jim.

My harness is punched April 2009 and is good for two years before recertification is req'd.

Helmet is Snell 2000 certified.

I think I'll bolt down the crotch strap just to be sure. Have padding on the roll bar for street driving and will bring some extra just in case...

Yep, that's one time VW disrespect works in our favour.
