'71 Swing Axle Gear Ratios

My '66 Bug needs a new tranny. I've been shopping around and have located a '71 Swing Axle unit. Now the research I've done indicates that the gear ratios didn't change from '67 to '72 (which is what I want. My stock '66 unit is a pain on the highway), but the charts I've seen didn't make any distinction between the IRS and Swing Axle units made after '67. Is there a difference in gear ratios with these Swinger units or are they just IRS units with swing axles.  Could this have been from a \"Canadian Standard\" model. I believe they came with 1200 motors. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I'm almost sure I've seen a 71 \"canadian stanard\" with a 1200cc.  Those trans would have a 437 r&p , the same as your 66 has now.  I also once had a 73 \"canadian standard\" that had a 1600cc dp with swingaxle but I believe it would have had a 412 r&p , a little better on the hwy.  Now I have a 75 \"canadian standard\"  with 1600cc fi and IRS trans .   Any way  maybe Bruce could tell us agian if the numbers on the trans can tell you what it should be.

if you are winding out too much on the highway, you could run a taller rear tire.  195/70 or 205/70 would bring up the rear a lot and not wind out the tranny and motor too high.  here are some charts that might help you out. follow the link
