Der Kleine Kraut!
« on: January 03, 2006, 05:58:11 PM »
Between other projects I will be building a super lightweight 1956 race bug.
I am going to build everything myself except for the trans.
I will try to post everything that I do.
This is DER KLEINE KRAUT

I purchased the car through Airspeed summer of 2005

Since I am new to the racing side of things.I will probably need some input here and there. That is what you guys are here for! I will only write about stuff which I have already done or need an answer to. Because I change my mind frequently by the minute about stuff that I would like to do. I am going for the patina look and will concentrate on the motor only with this car!
All out speed is what I am after .I don't care about taking it on the freeway
or keeping stock gear ratios. 1/4 mile time is the key!  I don't care what I have to do to get it. Whether it be cutting something off or welding something on.But I want this car to remain stock looking from the outside. This car will go fast. Every nut, bolt washer or metal piece which I can lighten with aluminum or create with fiberglass will be done. I would really like your input on what you have done to lighten your machine to race.

To begin I ditched the fenders and bought airspeed racing fenders.
I also have a fiberglass w decklid from the airspeed swap

First Question. I know Lexan scratches easily. Now what if I tinted them all or put some sort of transparent film over them .Would that stop it from scratching?
Second.Where do I purchase aluminum fender bolts?
Third.I need to buy a whole wack of fiberglass and materials for fiberglassing.Where can I get a good price?

You could try using that clear 3M coating that Kirin was thinking of putting on his mommys car, tint scratches too, so I dont know how long it will last.

The same company that developed the 3M paint protection film also makes the windshield tearaways that NASCAR teams use. They also developed a similar application for use on US military Blackhawk helicopters.
They've got some cool procts. Check 'em out at http://www.protint.com/ProShieldRacingTear-Off.ivnu

Like we talked about before, You have the fenders, we also make the running boards, rear deck lid and front hood in Fiberglass.  We have light weight seats, we can get glass doors, ERCO wheels, Aluminum beams.

I run lexan in the three rear windows, front are glass for safety as I drive it on the street.

FYI the 3m stuff would be really thick for the window. Also if you ever wanted to remove it I'm sure you would do some damage to the lexan....
Something like the \"Saranwrap\" as mentioned before like racers use would be a better application.
If more power is better. Then too much is just enough.
Why do it once when you can do it thrice?
