Title: Why do some bay buses have 2" inch holes in top back cooling tin and some don't?
Post by: kinggeorge13 on April 29, 2019, 08:35:55 AM
So I've seen some bus cooling tins with a couple 2" (approx) round holes in the top rear tin between the fan shroud and the rear of the engine bay.  Some have been manufactured with the holes in place (and include a very short stubby "pipe" that's part of the tin but only an inch or two long and some clearly with no holes at all.   I've seen those holes wide open.  I've seen those holes capped off with all kinds of interesting things by previous owners.   I've searched  here and TheSamba but maybe my search words suck because I can find no information on why some have it and what their purpose was.   Did they originally have hoses attached to them that went somewhere?   None of the ones I've seen go anywhere (or are capped off).

Thanks!

This is what I mean.

Here is the top corner tin without the hole:

Here is a corner piece with the hole:

And......of course right after I post, I find the answer.  I could not for the life of me remember where I found that photo and now I've found it.   BusDaddy answered this exact question for someone else 9 years ago.  It's for the preheat system on 1975/76 engines.    It would appear the consensus is if you are running FI, then you likely don't need these set up so just cap them off.   That's exactly what I'm going to do.
