Gotta say, it's nice to see an off-road section to this forum! My wife and I spent 20 years in the Glamis dunes before selling our
rig in 1997 with heavy hearts. Here's a few pics from the past...

The frame was a Fibertech 108" wheelbase mid-engine. We ran a 2332cc motor at 12.5:1, FK87, and Fumio head work. The trans had a 4:62
gear with close ratio third and fourth gears...

Ripping it up...

Time for a drink...

Thanks for sharing. How did your rail make out at glamis? Ive always wanted to go but people say "hills to high and to hot for vw power" I'm running a 2275 vw.
Thanks for posting

We always had a great time unless the weather was ugly or the sand was a mess. I kept things simple with our car... no electronics.
In the 20 years we went, I can only recall being towed once or twice. We went an average of 13-15 times a year when we had the "easy"
trailer. The inclosed trailer was bitch... until you got to the dunes and set up; then it was party central!
-
Our friend Grub had a nice J&J rail with 2 liter water cooled power (built by Darrell Vittone). Grub hand polished the 12 spoke Americans.
He even let us use them on the front of our car for a year while he was screwing his car together...
-
We were always loners until we got to the sand... then we'd look for folks who duned the way we liked. It seemed to work out!
-
One of the best we encountered was Dennis and wife Valerie. I traded Dennis (red jacket) an engine build (he was a house framer) for a patio cover... what a deal!
-
The view from Oldsmobile Hill. Nothing beats the sounds of big cc's directly behind your ears!
-
Manhandling a car in the dunes sure makes you thirsty... time for a cruise over to Boardmanville where the chili is hot
and the beer is ice cold. There's even shopping close by at South Coast Plaza for the ladies!
-
There's ALWAYS something to see car-wise. I got a ride up Oldsmobile Hill in the orange car; scared the $hit outta me BIG TIME!!
-
Jeff Mamer's sidewinder VW was plenty fast! My boss, while working for Renfree VW, owned the blown rig...
-
Wheels UP!! Freddie was the man... nitrous and sweet set of Fumio's angle-port heads made some nice power until a solenoid got a little
sand in it and grenaded the motor. Time for a beer break!
-
Not a "Duner" but theses pics got me thinking of a family vaction there. Thanks for sharing.

Not a "Duner" but love the pics. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Nothing beats a hot shower in the dunes... a metal GI can in the sun gets the water hot and a canvas shower bag makes it happen!
GREAT, stuck again!

One more for the road...

WOW! Thanks for posting . Those are some nice looking buggy's ! Big power too and with IDA's in the sand. Must have been a rocket out there.

Your welcome! The power-to-weight ratio makes for some incredible sensations for sure. Our car weighed in at 800 pounds and had about
an inch of throttle-pull on the pedal to achieve full throttle plus a Berg three puck disc and Kennedy 2400 pd. pressure plate... kinda' like
turning on a light switch! I ran some easy float bowl vent tubes early on which improved drive ability a bunch!

You hiding out from the wind under there?
I want to build a mid engine buggy now

....You hiding out from the wind under there?
Naw, the lighter wouldn't work ;) Actually that was a staged pic!
-
Hey sarge, is that the same buggy that had seats done at brads?

No... the Fibertech was our second buggy. The first was a Sandrail Mfg frame we bought new in 1974. A pic of the seats....
