Title: Westfalia 2 burner cooktop renewal
Post by: pittwagen on January 20, 2014, 09:59:14 AM
As some of you may know, I have installed a 1974 Westfalia P27 interior into my 79 Bus.  I am getting down to the finishing touches and I need to make a decision as to whether I install a stove (cooktop) or not.

The 2 burner cooktop (the actual top) is rusted in some areas.  It was originally supposed to be a stainless steel top.  Maybe a coating at best.  I have not been able to find a replacement that is in any better shape.  And no, "polishing" will not solve the problem.  Is there anyone that does ceramic exhaust coating locally that may be able to help as the temperature from the burners probably heats the surrounding top several hundred degrees.  Any thoughts.

Can you post a picture of the cook top I think that I have a couple but it will help me narrow it down to which one.
Thanks

Well I found it, it is the same as yours. It even has the ' Traveller' Badge that is missing on yours... But I think that it might have more rust around the burners then yours does. Sorry.

I have the same model as well in my Adventurewagen. I had it re-done at Rocket Ceramicoat in Abbotsford and it rusted again in a year or 2 :( although it did look really nice when freshly done.
can't remember what service it was (whether or not it was actually ceramic coating) as I had many pieces done and not all were ceramic coat.

Anyway, the owner did give me one interesting piece of advice. He said that the black pot supports are Porcelain coated and that the finish on them is superior to any aftermarket coating one could put on top. As such he refused to coat them and said that anyone who offers to doesn't know what they are doing. Not sure if that's true, but thought I'd pass it on. Not exactly good news if you wanna make them shiny and smooth..

Good luck. Looking forward to seeing the evolution of your bus. I've seen it a couple times at the swaps. I really like it. I'm doing somthing similar with under dash fans. Steve.

Last I heard , Jerry's muffler shop in Kellowna do ceramic coatings , if they are still around . The next great new business here in nanaimo is zhingers chrome plating , it's a spray on application that is ultra durable , they can coat anything , tell him I told yah and ask about the high temp issue. His number is 1-250-755-1114 ;)

Cheers Jerry
