Title: Kirin Jacobsen 1962 Beetle Seabert:
Post by: kirin on May 23, 2006, 07:34:17 PM
Prelude:
5 years ago I got given my beetle from a lawyer in Palo Alto. For the longest time I have been wanting to do a proper resto of her. Being a California car she is the perfect candidate.

In the winter of 2003/2004 I tore her apart mechanically and interior wise to do a resto. I managed to finish my beetle for my grad and then put her into storage for year while I moved to Switzerland. It was a hard push but I managed to get her done in time. When I returned in 2005 I didn't actually get to drive her at all that summer. So into Doubledoor she went for a good lowering. Spring 2006 was looking to be an excellent season. Then on my way to a cruise she got rearended. Cosmetically it was only a flesh wound but after friends and family convinced me to do the full monty the game was on....

In this topic it will show basically a blog of the restoration of my beetle. First step will be dismembering her body. Which has already commenced. Tommorow is interior tear down time...

To begin this story lets have a few pictures.

In one of her proudest moments

Way to go Kirin.  Get intimate with it.

I got a project of my own going.

O lad she's merely a flesh wound. Stronger,  faster, Seabert the sequel.

And with the down payment from ICBC ( while you recover from the obvious physical trauma you've gone through ) its a nice start.

Hey, all kiddin aside, it could have been a lot worse for you and Seabert.

Be sure to keep the photo diary and keep us posted.

Love me or hate me I'm still around and hey there may be a mini me running around one day. Nobody in the near future I'm obviously wedded to my projects.

Thanks guys. I definetly do believe I can make this car from a nice beetle to a real looker. I'm pretty much half way there now I just have to return the favour. Fun times come ahead.

Sage advice silas,
This isn't in truth the first car I have restored or started rather. The other car is still in the body shop and will be for a long time. Its not like 70 year old cars rust or anything.
There is a lot of strength and wisdom in walking away when you get angry.
I'm off to pick up Andre the trimmer. Pics up later.

Who's gonna do the work bud? I am not being a salesman here either. Just wondering. I do recomend someone that knows the VW's. Especially for the collision work. I will be the first to admit that collison repair is my weakest hat. I think Stephan or Ryan or Lanny would be your best bet here man. Let us know and keep us updated.

I know that. Just wondering what he is up to. If there were damage to the inners, I wouldn't take it anyways. Not so good with collision work.

Hey Jason,
My car is going to Man with barn autobody. He is a guy who does rotesserie restos out in the boondocks of ladner. He does fancy restos for all the farmers and is a good guy.
For the collision damage basically all there is the dents. No crinkles no nothing. The decklid took the brunt of the hit and folded like a taco and I guess saved the car strangely..
She's a fighter..

Nothing really new today.
Discussed plans with the body shop. She is definetly going up on a spit! I did manage to pick up a mint decklid and license plate light so I'm golden in that department.
Tommorow will bring some more progress.

Long time no update. The body is still at Redi-strip. Apparently there is a backlog and such however we will indeed see how much longer it takes....

I stripped the pan earlier this week and its ready to go to the blaster then come back and get cleaned up. However I need to figure out how to remove the torsion arms and bars. Anybody with tips please msg me. Also I'm beginning to get curious as to what if any modifications I need to do to my car for having a Hi-po drivetrain in it.
Cheers,

Talking to my painter and body guy. It was decided that since the car was sooo incredibly clean it really didn't need a complete sand blast. Redi-strip just attacked the \"problem areas\". Since my car is base+1 paint the original paint is a really good base for more body work since its stuck for 44 years thus far.
Hope that clarifys why we are doing things this way...

I can only hope that when I get there I have half as good metal to start up.

Hi Kirin,
Car is looking good!
That brings back many memories of my 65 Beetle (I'm still restoring it!!!)
Redi-Strip does a good job, they have been sold.
John used to run the shop.
Make sure that you put the car in epoxy primer, to prevent it from rusting.
Gotta go,
Shawn

sorry, you lost me.

imho, bare metal or blasted & epoxy primed metal is the best base for filler/body work. not original paint that has allready been painted over.

if there are 2 coats of paint on that car, original paint and 1 respray, more bodywork and another spray would leave the car with 3 layers of paint.

again, i'm just trying to get a feel for how you are going about this.

btw, the metal that has allready been blasted looks absolutely mint. very nice base to start with. i'm sure you've seen pics of my \"holey\" oval and i must say you're saving yourself a bunch of time by starting with such a clean car.

well you cold argue that Kirin is being suckered or that its just plain cheaper or that the existing paint has already bonded with the metal and could be sanded and prepped instead of stripping it to bare metal where it may require a zinc wash?! I think thats what the process is called. Someone else would know better but its just karen......

screw paint, its just added weight!

Well the best as I can understand it.
There are two sorts of paint/ primer bonding. Mechanical and chemical. While 1976bus logic is reasonably on par lets think this through. How thick can a layer of paint be? My car is being sanded down(whats remaining painted) to the original coat. Therefore there is the original primer and paint sealing my car plus an excellent base for the new paint to stick to. While it may not be considered the \"normal\" method its what my painter of 30 some odd years and my bodyman of 15 something years think is best. Overall I think the results will be stunning. And taking the whole car down to bare metal might of been nice it just really didn't need it!

But to each their own.

Your painter & body guys have been doing that for a long time. You are paying for it.

Opinions are probably provided in good faith and are always welcome.

If you were trying to create a show car, you probably would spend a whole bunch of money and that would not be an issue.

I look forward to future updates as I may learn something before I make a mistake on my project.

Actually my goal is to get a bit of press with this car.
However my main goal is to build something up that will last for years and something that I can drive and enjoy a lot. And it will be really clean since how many rotesseried beetles are out there?

since i dont see a difference between pan-off and rotisserie...i can think of quite a few cars. it's really nothing new.

good luck on the project. as long as it remains fun and educational, that's all that matters.

I think mostly the difference is the ease of working on the under side. I think its a cool concept. I doubt it will catch on but I'm having fun doing it this way.

I hope to learn a lot from this project and carry whatever I can from this one onto my next.... Which I'm hoping will be a bus. But I'm far from that right now..

I'm pretty sure that's not what Silas meant. He's a smart cat, and probably knows what a rotisseri is.

It doesn't matter if your car is on a spit, or saw-horses, or concrete blocks. Neither of those determine the final outcome, only quality craftsmanship really matters. I can think of more than a handfull of really clean cars here locally that didn't see a rotisseri. It's also not a new idea, it's already caught on, your bug is not the first car to see a rotisseri.

Your body/ paint guys are correct. The factory baked finish is excellent once the respray has been sanded off. The rotisserie will help with the finished product. The next time you see a 'restored' car on a hoist, check out the bodywork. 99.9% of cars done on the ground will look pretty poor on a hoist . Stephan Feeg did a great job on DD's 55 by tilting the body almost 90 degrees to prep the underside, a great trick. I'll say it again, mock up, mock up, mock up...

Hey Lanny,
Thanks for the words of wisdom. Definetly going off of your mock model of building. BTW Neil Macdonald my body guy says hello.

Stopped by today and checked out the pan. Couldn't get any really good photos of it. However it came out nice. There will be a battery patch that has to be fixed. And there was a little bit of a hole in it that blew through. However it should be fixed up soon.

However I did take a few photos today of the wheels.

I think it came out pretty well. Plans are to clean up some of the welding slag. Make it look a bit more\"Finished\" And then give it a really nice coat of glossy black!

Cut out the old one...

For the collision damage basically all there is the dents. No crinkles no nothing. The decklid took the brunt of the hit and folded like a taco and I guess saved the car strangely..

Hey guys,
Just wanted to explain the 45 hours into it comment. Yes some of that was putting in the battery tray patch. However a lot of it was putting in that torsion adjustor, measuring it out, mocking it up etc. Just cutting out the old tube was a major pain in the ass since theres very little room and they way its built makes it a challenge.

We put in the extra effort to remove some OG welding slag around the frame horns and the torsion tubes. The paint on the torsion tubes is damn near top of the car worthy. It feels more like powdercoat then paint and my powdercoating looks almost dull next to it. Time was also spent banging as many dents as possible out of it and reforming the repop battery tray to make it look correct. I'm really happy with it and I know its as perfect as we could make it besides welding in complete new pans.. or buying a whole new pan.

Paint wise, Standox black epoxy primer went on first followed by some standox real black.

Transmission wise... I have a 72 Canadian standard transmission that will go off to Mr. Tweedle for a rebuild and for some hi performance prepping.

Right now I'm  planning to throw a lot of whiteline ground control products and some Konis to help the chassis get and stay grounded.

Okay so the pans now home. I'm just waiting on some parts to come in. I can't decide whether to use stainless steel brake lines or what?
Any ideas?
Heres some pics...

Alright long time no update. Also all my pictures have gone down since my picture host decided to change its server. However the pans actually getting partially reassembled this weekend. I'm picking up my cad plated bolts tommorow. The theme running is gloss black, silver and gold. Should be nice and subtle. Pics tommorow.

Hudsons plating
275 West 5th Vancouver

I had nearly every single bolt on my beetle done and it rung in at about 114 bucks. It was done in gold cad by the way.

So through school and sickness I have finally gotten the beetle bug back. Lack of time and funds have kept me away from putting the pan back together however today I started up the long tedious task of putting it back together. I got the shift rod mostly in. Next all I got to do is fully instally the bushing. I managed to \"Dum-Dum\" down the pan gasket today. I also tore down the front beam, and the steering box.... Also did some other organizing stuff. I'd post pics but its all pretty boring at this point. I see myself spending some serious lootcakes in the very near future to progress this thing along.

I've taken a bit of a hiatus from this project. However I've sorted out a some stuff in my head and am now waiting on some parts from Franklins VW werks and Airkewled....

Also the project has been moved to a new location. With more light and room so its a much better work space....

Ken that hurts man! It has a interior it just needs to be put in it and all the parts put back together. Seriously isn't having a 2010 Volkswagen okay?

Oh story on the pics...
Ladyfriend dropped the camara and corrupted all the pictures so I'm going to have to take new ones and wait for Future shop to give my Canon back.

Ok ok, give the kid a break. We all know he sold the car and just doesn't have the cajones to fess up. He probably used the money to buy a nice Toyota Corolla or something.

I look forward to it.

Yeah yeah give me flack.
Unfortunatly during the fall and the spring I'm a full time student. Simply, that leaves little time and money and energy to work on cars.... In amongst all this I'm pushing hard to help my mom get her car done and get my vintage beasties on the road. Plus try to have some life.

No corolla's or daewoos in this fleet. Just a vintage BMW and beetle and a daily Rabbit..

Ken. I have no idea what plans you have for over christmas. But I plan on hammering out my floor pan and getting it back on the ground over the break. IF you want and have time, catch a ferry over and I will feed you whatever Guinness/ winter ale you like and supply tons of BBQ fodder.

Oh the teaser pics...

Pffft. Bachelors degree. Nice excuse. I think somebody's gettin a wee bit embarrassed to be coming up with these grandiose alibi's. A life, sure sure.

I should indeed have some free time over the holidays. Might want to pick a time now to be sure. I use my holidays to the utmost until closing time.

HAHA.
Actually I just cut up my old '75 BMW 2002. Waaay too rusty so now I'm down to 81 RHD 323I and the bug... And a Kawasaki!
This is turning out to be the worlds slowest respray. The panels for my car were really f'ed up. Fenders didn't fit and finding decent ones is difficult. I think I can almost see the light. Should be right around by the time I go back to school.. Sigh.

Plus side, I've cleaned out a ton of space for working on the beast.. So Lifes good!

Will for sure try. Just been organizing the cad plating and building up a set of turkis running boards. The passenger side fender is a 58 thats been converted over to be a "62" fender....  Hood had a bunch of tears and weird dents.. However the gaps now are nice.

I'm all smiles. Can't remember the last time a car made me feel this way. Lanny's work is outright amazing. Pics don't really do it justice. And the speed that he works at and what gets done in not a lot of time is incredible.

Looking forward to the next step......

The 39/40 is a local Ladner dudes ride. Back wheels and fronts are 15's. All are 5.5 width. 145 width Nankangs up front. 205 70- 15's in the back. I'm going to have to find some spacers since they rub.
Oh and they are flat 4's repops.

Hate to say it again but it's been a long time coming. Finally having a garage that I can stumble out to in my own yard has helped a lot. Even if it comes with all the other home owners responsibilities:P

Anyways started wrenching on it and started getting the wiring harness run. Got to love the sand that is still coming out of the car....

Cleaned the shop, Moved the car to a better position and got the hood seal in and cleaned up all the underhood polishing splatter spots.
Just need to dress the seam and I can call it done.

Tonights resto work.
Cleaned the filthy interior, started by pulling the steering column and wheel out of the car, then started cleaning it, and then laid down some sound deadening.

Got a bunch more wiring done and also finished installing the engine bay seals..

Thanks guys!
I'm waiting on parts and fundage to return to my wallet. Doesn't help that I have a property tax bill next month and I'm unemployed so that leaves me a bit tight. However I will Eat Ramen to try to get this car done by September!

Also some of the damndest stuff is out of stock for this thing. From Master Cylinder pushrod retainer clips(VERY Important might I add) to taillight bezels... At any rate I'm stuck waiting to get the steering back together until my new turnsignal switch and assorted bits show up. I painted the column shaft and have the bearings ready, just waiting on the firewall seal and some other bits..

Final question. When trying to install my wiper switch I can't get it to not spin with the knob. This brass bit on the switch spins. Is this right or wrong?

Thanks guys! Really awesome to see the support after all these years!

My goal is to have it ready for my Buddies wedding which is September 20th and my 10 year highschool reunion is right around that time. Reason why I would like the car completed by then is I took it to my High School grad in 2004 and actually we had a cruise with a bunch of members of the Airspeed members. I will come up with a list of stuff and send it off to you guys (Nivag and 69 westy). And if anybody has some stuff that they think could be useful for my build please let me know.
A

So I need one of these... Its the steering box side of the steering shaft. Mine has virtually no splines left..

So before I win the award for longest running most out of date post lets pick things back up.

Finally rolled the bug back into the shop after a year. Whats changed on it? Uhhh it collected some dust? I also managed to whittle down my ridiculous fleet to just one daily driver pick up and a motor cycle. So I have NOTHING else to work on! And I pledged no stupid impulse purchases until this thing is roadworthy.

So I set to work getting fluids in it, I need to bleed the brakes again since I'm really not happy with the pedal feel/ level. OH and sort out this nasty Transmission leak.  (https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpt1/v/t1.0-9/12118735_10156210035195074_6784769257617473173_n.jpg?oh=4e4ca56fccd93a78dfb25cce7ad67b51&oe=56C6B1AC)
Totally feels like 2 steps forward one step back.
I'm going to try one more thing to it before I yank it out. I have parts on the way that I'm hoping I won't need.

Decided to pull it out today. Waiting on parts from CIP but might as well get the real ugly part over and done with.

(https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/12141569_10156212217265074_6584322250622678077_n.jpg?oh=f33105f93305edee7cd13d90394d3a70&oe=56BD9C39)

Its leaking from one of the lower axle flange bolt areas.

Hoping that a heavy duty axle flange kit and some gaskets and some other sort of gasket material might fix it.
