reference section/serial numbers

as i am completely new to v.w. i have been looking for info.. such as ---what is my pan date---what gearing is my tranny--etc.
i have been able to find out most info, but a one stop shop, with compiled info, such as "trans axle code guide" as an example would be a great resource?  it could go into the beginning of each category, ie: tranny,engine, etc. or a stand alone heading. ...thanks derek
