Oval started but not quite.
« on: July 17, 2016, 07:45:06 PM »
So I got the Oval to start today. First time the motor has run since I bought it from Chris a couple years back. Anyway it starts but only when I release the key, it will sputter then come to life. Once it is running it seems to idle OK. I've static set the timing and was able to do a quick synch on the carbs. I'm not super familiar with the carburetor, so I think something needs to be set up. These are the Solex 32 PBIC repros that WW sell. anyone have any ideas? here is a video of the initial start. Every attempt in starting has been similar.

Just for kicks run a temporary jumper wire from the battery + to the #15 terminal on the coil (the one with the black wire from the car on it) and see how it behaves, a funky ignition switch could do what you describe.

I've seen that several times before.  It's a quirk of the oval ignition switch.

Well that wasn't what I expected to be the problem, but it worked. Now just have to figure a fix. Thanks Busdaddy and Bruce.
