Title: 56 deluxe oval - the project is getting close to road.
Post by: J A Red on May 01, 2014, 02:52:55 PM
Thought I'd post the beginning of my first ACVW project.

I got the body off the pan right away and started inventory of what was missing and what need to be replaced. Ended up ordering all new bearings and seals for the 4 corners as well as all new brake parts for the rear. The PO had already done the front brakes. I installed drop spindles last month and dropped the rear 1 spline as well.

The big change was selling that really nice 36hp engine that I picked up from Thomas a couple months back. I picked up another engine yesterday and couldn't wait to see what it looked like bolted up to the pan.

I'll post more as I progress.

Had some parts painted by Slammedbus and picked them up on Friday. All original colours and super happy the way they turned out. Now just need some tires and I'll have a complete rolling chassis.

Haven't had a chance to do much, but thought I'd post a few pics.  This past week I've been mocking up the engine to install the Fram oil filter, and replace the throttle with the original style from WW. Should have the oil lines and oil cooler delivered early January, the all the engine tin will be sent out for blasting and powder coating.

looks good
i love that fuel line
just wondering if you got that as a kit or if you got the line and fittings yourself, thinking of doing something similar on my car
thanks

The fuel line is part of the ww okrasa kit.

Also if possible toss the engine into the car and check clearances on the engine lid spring and the fram filter, it was TIGHT up there in the split, but that was also a large spring car so ya never know.

Yeah, fuel lines come with the kit. Joe Ruiz (Mr Okrasa) sells them separately if you are looking for some. I'll be doing the final fitting and install once the media blasting is done with it in the car.

Been a little slow on the project front, until today. Got the body loaded on Gordo's flat deck and dropped it off paint. Thx Gordo!
Should have it back early May all shiny and green.  Might just be driving this year?!

No paint yet. Ran into a couple minor issues but should have the car back home first week of June. Will have a bunch of pictures and updates then.

Time for an update.

So the body has been in the paint shop since April now, and we are finally getting close to seeing some colour on it. Ran into a number unforeseen issues with the body and pan that either needed to be fixed or that I couldn't leave be.

First discovered some minor corrosion under the primer randomly around the body. Looked like after the PO stripped it down to bare metal, that it was not wiped down properly prior to priming. So off came all the old primer and back to bare metal she went.

Second issue came up by fluke really when one of the driver's door hinges was being replaced. I brought the pan into the shop so the body could get bolted down tight and help line up the door and new hinge. (Keep in mind I bought this car with the body just sitting on the pan and had never bolted it up myself) Upon trying to bolt the body down it became evident that the pan had a twist in it somewhere. So I get the phone call to come down to the shop to check out the twist. So off comes the body and there we are measuring the pan to find out why it's twisted. PO told me that he had replaced the pan halves, and that's where the problem turned up. Turns out a less than perfect weld holding the rear of the left pan had let go creating a twist. Soon as that section was clamped tight, bingo everything straightened out. But now that we started looking at the weld job we found a bunch more little things that "probably" should get fixed.

So with a now straight pan and the body bolted down, it's on again. Door hinge gets replaced. Now Kelly (the body guy) decides to bolt all the fenders and hood and lid to check for fitment. And another phone call to come down to the shop. Something was out of whack in the front apron area. shit!!! Here we go again. Back when the body was taken back down to bare metal, a number of small patches here and there were found, they looked fairly well done at the time, but with the body sitting square and flat on the pan nothing was lining up. It was all closed but not great. It seems that the PO didn't square anthing up before welding in any of his patches. Soooo, out come the patches and replaced once everything is squared up. This included the front apron, the hood, all four fenders and rear body mounts. Now with all the doors, fenders, hood and engine lid fitting just right, it's time to get back to why the car is there. PAINT. So although the car's been in the shop much longer than expected, I'm super happy with the job being done.

A couple weeks ago while the pan was still at the body shop I decided I had time to deal with my gas tank and get it ready to install once the body and paint were done. I'd had it media blasted and painted last year, but wanted to get the inside sealed. After some research if found that POR 15 makes a kit, so off I went to Lordco. My buddy that works there was able to supply me with the three components of the kit (cleaner, metal prep, and sealer) separately at a better price. I was hesitating on getting the cleaner because the PO had the tank stripped and cleaned a number of years ago.....shouldn't be anything in there right? shining a light inside showed a nice clean tank with minimal surface rust. shaking the tank turned up some hidden blasting sand. Ah, what the hell, cleaning it again won't hurt. Followed the directions, and mixed it at 1:1 with hot water and poured it in. Then spent the next couple hours rotating the tank to let the cleaner do its job.......and look what came out when I drained it! must've been stuck on real good!

A pre-GCVWS update. 2 weeks ago the painter called to say that his supplier couldn't locate the formula for L313 in a single stage. After some emails and texts with no luck, I thought what if I just google it? sure enough first hit was the Glasurit formula for single stage. So now car is primed and zipped down today to see the first bit of colour on the car.

Heading camping for a couple days, but could resist getting to work on the oval right away. doors are hung and fenders have been temporarily mounted so the body can be polished.

So it's been a while, so thought I'd post a couple overdue updates and pictures.

Last fall the a bunch of Okanagan members decided to do a cruise, so I had them drive by and help lift the body onto the pan. Wow, great to see the body and pan back together. And was great to have everyone swing by to help out.

After getting the body on the pan, I put the fenders on and it sat for most of the winter with no time to work on it.

April finally brought some time to work on the Oval, so I started of with getting the engine installed. Wasn't sure how hard that was going so jacked the back of the car and jumped right to it. Less than an hour later it was in! Think it looks pretty cool

Well the project is getting close being driveable, so thought I'd take some pics and show the progress.
- wiring is done and all 6volt electrics are working except horn and interior light.
- sound deadening done.
- All windows are in and doors are all trimmed out.
- new Flat4 GTV steering wheel installed. Shortened the steering column to make up for the deeper dished wheel.
- all trim and emblems

Time for an update on the Oval. After not making down to the GCVWS last year because of a number of issues, I put it back in the garage and took a break.
First issue was not being able to properly tune my carbs. After some reading turned out that this was not uncommon with the WW repro carbs sold in their kits. So I sent the carbs down to Joe Ruiz in Cali to have them "worked" on.
Second issue. My original trans was leaking like crazy and super loud. So in November I sent it down to Dave Cosgrave in Chiliwack, and had it rebuilt. Dave found that the pinion gear had a few teeth broken off and was in need of some TLC.

here's hoping your carb & trans issues can be fixed pronto so you can get some seat time this summer!

So it’s been a while since my last post so thought I’d do an update.

The engine:
After getting the reproduction carbs back from getting the throttle shafts rebushed to stop the shafts leaking fuel, I still had problems getting the engine to run right. So out came the engine and time to look a little deeper. Keep in mind I had bought this as a running engine with not a lot of history of the engine itself other than it had been refreshed for the PO. After pulling off the fan shroud, I noticed evidence of leaks between the intakes and the heads. Took the intakes off and they both needed to be machined flat. While I was at it, I found some minor leaks between the heads and exhaust flanges so spent a day getting all the surfaces flat and true, added new gaskets and put the everything back together. While I was at I did a complete rebuild of the carbs, even though there wasn’t many miles on them, and installed a new main seal (old one had been seeping). Engine went back in, started up and right away seemed to be running much better, got the carbs synced up and tuned and it was idling real smooth. While letting it warm up to do the timing I looked under the engine to find a large puddle, and oil dripping from the front of the motor! Long story short, turns out the “36hp” main seal I had sourced did not seal properly around the flywheel. As of 3 weeks ago it has a new Wolfsburg West main seal and appears to be running with no real leaks!

The interior:
Since the last update I’d been researching new interiors. I had the original seat covers and door panels that were dark green vinyl with light green piping. My plan was to change to a nice tan cloth interior but found after some searching that a Deluxe Oval in Reed green with vinyl interior was not very common at all. So vinyl it was, and turned out that Lenny Copp was the only supplier that could get that colour. A month later I had a complete Lenny Copp interior including headliner, sitting in my garage. How hard could it be to install?? I remember Josh telling me he did his headliner and it was a piece of cake to do (he didn’t really say that. He said it was a pain) anyway I decided to try. Headliner took about 4 tries and more patience than I thought I had, carpet was slightly easier and by the time I got to the seats it was a breeze.

So now with just a week left to GCVWS’18 I can say my car will be there.

Now at this point with the exceptions of some accessories to add and a few little details to work on, the car is done(ish). There is a brand new 36hp vintage speed engine being built to replace this one, but that is a whole different story for another time. Here are a couple last shots from the local VW show (Das AutoShau), and looking forward to seeing you all at the GCVWS next week.
