Clutch disk for choice for high HP?
« on: June 06, 2015, 06:13:01 PM »
Old car had a 4 puck.....it was like a switch, street driving chattered like a mofo. Clutch disk is last thing (thank Christ) on my shopping list. What have guys been using with success lately? I'm looking at either the copperhead or centerforce dual friction so far. Gotta hold 200+horse, any suggestions appreciated.

I have used both copperhead and centerforce disks.
I haven't bought a new one (of either) in a long time, but my impression was they appeared to be the same disk with the material switched from side to side.
Both disks took a real beating at the drag strip, and held up to the hard launches.

It's an insane world out there... and I'm proud to be part of it!

When I was in SLC, Art told me about the Copperhead disc he had made.
The flywheel is chrome vanadium steel.  Your clutch's shoe is cast iron.  Because of this, he chose to have the copper pucks installed against the flywheel, and the asbestos lining against the pressure plate.
Seemed to make sense to me.

Old car had a 4 puck.....it was like a switch,
Was that with the original short clutch arm?
That's the same thing Bill S in So Cal said about his car with the short arm operating a Stage 2 clutch.  The long arm allows you to control the engagement more precisely.

Copperhead was my first choice. From what I understand Art sold ACE (or its assets) to his employees and they are still providing the same carb services and making the disks under "Blackline racing". When I asked for a shipping quote on the $115 disk they wanted $60 usd for shipping. Thought this was a little excessive, inquired why so much and got told they will only use the flat rate prepaid USPS boxes for shipping out of country????? Those things are a rip off!!!! Shipping is out of control!

did you ask how much shipping was to a us mailbox?
my guess if you had it shipped to mine and then I shipped it to you, it would be close to 50-60 bucks in the end
I agree excessive though

It would fit in a medium flat rate box, $12.65 to anywhere in the USA.

a setup i had fantastic results with was the berg super street disc and a aluminum shoe
kennedy stage 2 pressure plate.
too many passes to count on the first disc /p.p and replaced as part of racing consumables and beat the life out of the second set as well.
low gearing helps as well as a smooth clutch control device  .if i remember ran a bruce long arm on the second go around and latter added clutch management.
original nitrous motor going together going to try a blacmagic.
tilton dual disc with stage 1 is very agressive and kennedy dual disc works well also with stage 1

Aluminum shoe eh Jim? Do tell more......

I have a stage 2 (late style) that I'd like to use as I have put some time and $$ into it to resurface after it did the ol kenedy cup/concave deal.
Also have the famous Bruce-long-arm deal
Bought an anti shocker as well that I want to mount inside the tunnel straight off the clutch arm at pedals.

You will regret that.  I'm the one that sees first hand what a black magic does to your synchro rings in your g'box.  The BM disc is so heavy, it's inertia is much more than the VW synchros can handle.  I know how you drive your car.  Your driving is not unusual, and I guarantee you will bend all your synchros (except 1st!)  Even if you think you'll take it easy, you will still bend them.

ouch those poor syncros.
im doing things a bit different since i switched to
multi disc clutches and so far syncros
are holding up.lower shift rpm ,modified stock shifer to slow the shifting rate down and
using lat oil .knock on wood it holds up .

you can order a kennedy pp with a aluminum shoe ,
cant remember the weight difference but seams to disapate heat
quickly

I've been running a Centerforce dual-friction disc for ten years in my street-strip Beetle.  I'm using a Kennedy Stage 2 PP and one of Bruce's long clutch lever arms.

So far, I have over 630 trips down the drag strip plus street driving.  I think that this disc helps to save gearboxes, because I'm a terrible driver on the drag strip...ha ha:)
