im ready to wire my buggy and have a few questions about the charging system and alternator.
first off heres what I have. and is this an external reg. alternator?
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi30.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc328%2Fdirtydeedss%2Fdunebuggy001-1.jpg&hash=092bb520534ef2412c3df6e21dd1c521cad37811)
if it is, this is the right regulator?
(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi30.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc328%2Fdirtydeedss%2Fdunebuggy002-1.jpg&hash=7ac2522fa043aadaa82873f569af552554be9d94)
i have found this diagram how to wire the alternator, http://www.cbperformance.com/pdf/Alternato...WiringGuide.pdf (http://www.cbperformance.com/pdf/AlternatorWiringGuide.pdf)
the wire off the B+ terminal on the alternator goes to the starter, does it go to the same terminal on the starter as the battery cable goes to?
and does anybody know of a wiring diagram how to wire the regulator?
This here i dont plan on using, it is on the shelf and was wondering what it is?
(it is wired onto the alternator)

Yes that is an external reg'd alt... if you have some extra cash I would highly recommend an internal reg'd one, much cleaner and easier to wire.
Otherwise check out vintagebus.com (or something like that) for wiring diagrams
-
Thanks for the link, im going to use the alternator i have just because i already have it, i checked out the wiring diagrams on vintage bus, but i dont know what year beetle diagram to follow, because i dont know what year the alternator set up i have would be from. any ideas?
-
shouldn't really matter for the year as long as you have one with external reg and 12v. VW didn't really change wire colours much.
-
I can't make it out but have you tried simply googling the model number on that Motorola piece? You'd be surprised what you come up with especially when you have a specific number.
-
can we see a close up pic of the terminals on the buggy motor alt & the bosch reg?
i'm thinking this is close to the diagram you want to follow...

-
also, does that black plug & harness on the shelf motor plug directly into the motorola reg? does the black plug also plug directly on the buggy motor alt?
if so, try taking that black plug & harness and plug it into the buggy alt, then plug the harness into the motorola reg.....then run a thick 10 or 12 gauge wire from b+ on the battery to b+ on the alt.....then wire that leftover blue wire on the motorola reg to the red light on the back of the speedo.
if that lets the smoke out....run. B)

i hooked thjat motorola piece up to the reg and then ran the battery wire and it didnt charge. Im thinking maybe that that motorola regulator might not work or either the alternator doesnt work, because i am fairly sure that i have hooked up the motorola right. ( i also did have that alternator taken apart at one time, so maybe i put it together wrong?) I followed this wiring diagram. http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/schem/altreg.gif (http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/schem/altreg.gif) After i get home from school ill take more pics of the other regulator.

From the lounge:
I am not a guru but I seen to remember some things.
I will see if I can find the picture of my engine with the outside \"Motorola piece
-
I was going to say the same thing. That pic with the harness pluged into an alt. and the motorola reg. with its plug , should just plug together. If the other end of that harness from the alt is missing(cant see it in the pic) I think the wire colors should be the same as on the reg , just match them up and put them togeter. And yes , the big + terminal on the alt can be run to the big + terminal on the starter ( same as from the battery)
-
Oh and I'm pretty sure the blue wire from reg needs to be hooked up to the dash light (and the light needs to actually work ) or it will not charge.
-
if you havent tested the alt i would just to be sure, cause otherwise you may have it hooked up right and not know it

ill try that.
-
....the blue wire from reg needs to be hooked up to the dash light (and the light needs to actually work ) or it will not charge.
right.
very important piece of the puzzle. make sure you check that light.
-
here is a great read and description of the charging system and how the circuit works. there is also a descrition on how you can rig it to work with minimal wiring closer to the end.

anyone know how to test a motorola voltage reg. to see if it working?
-
anyone know how to test a motorola voltage reg. to see if it working?
not sure.
wire it up and then test for voltage readings at the alt & the reg.
-
I went and took the generator and voltage regulator out of my beetle to get my buggy ready for the wcsd. After the showdown ill go back to monkying around with the alternator.
so heres my regulator for the generator.
so as i read the diagram off vintage bus i wanted to double check I dont fry anything befor i hook it all up.
#1goes to the battery?
#2 is the dummylight?
#3Goes to Df on the generator?
#4goes to D+ on the gen?

on the pic above i posted, terminal #1 has two spots for connectors. one goes to the battery and do I need the other one?
if so where does it go?
-
Looks right, look at the mounting tabs really close, there is usually d+, etc. stamped in there.
The bonus terminal isn't used unless you are adding acessories and need a battery terminal.
-
cool thanks i goter all going now
-
cool thanks i goter all going now
good show.
does it work?
-
yes it works. but the dummylight is all fubared up.
-
yes it works. but the dummylight is all fubared up.
how so?
is the system charging?
-
when i turn the key on it will not come on but when I get the engine running it will come on. the more rpm the brighter the light seems to get. but I checked the charging and its putting out about 14.5 volts.
-
You have +voltage from the key going to the other side of the light bulb , right?
-
 im confused
-
The dash light is not grounded, it's supplied with 12V+ (or 6V+ if you are running 6V) from the same wire as the oil light (black insulated area on the back of the speedo fed by a black wire from the ign. switch). The charge light is then lit by more voltage trying to go back to the generator.
+power from the generator against +power from the ign. switch = no light.
+power from the switch and a -draw from the generator = light.
-
hmm i just hooked it straight up to the light tab on the regulator, but its no big deal as i didnt plan on using it anyway. iv got a volmeter guage. thanks for the help.
