Title: Fs: 48 Ida's
Post by: Stephan Schmidt on October 20, 2005, 05:38:37 PM
selling a set of 48 IDA's.  Have linkages, vents, stacks, larger empi race stacks, fuel t fitting and braided lines, Red IDA caps.

I had bought these a while ago from someone in the USA that didn't "package" them properly, or so I was told

Anyways, A piece on one of the IDA's broke off. Bruce had welded on a new piece of Alum, and now a small hole needs to be milled.  I forget the name of the piece that broke off (its in the center of the two intakes, near the bottom).  You will need to get the few small pieces from Weber which are still avaliable.  Art from "ACE" and probably the guys at Airspeed will be able to get these pieces in.

I will get pictures later tonight.

To complete these you will need:

manifolds, jets & tubs, & those little pieces

Stephan

PS:  these are the early Italian IDA's

Can you weld aluminum on the carbs???
I just bought a welder and the dood told me that if I change the gas I can weld Aluminum. I bought that Clarke from Gutterslug. Can You weld  Aluminum with that welder?

Really depends if you got a spoolgun with the mig welder. The preferred method is TIG welding. IT IS A BLAST! Really tough to start but a nice weld when you are done. Do we have any TIG welding doods on the forum?? They will tell you

I believe you will need Argon gas and double the flow as it is not as dense as CO2 mix.

You could try but you'll be fighting it the whole time. Aluminum's too soft and pliable to push through a 7' whip.
Because the feed motor/rollers are located in the "box" on yours it has to push it all the way to the tip of the gun.
That's why ya need a spool gun which has the feed motor built right into the handle. There's pro's and con's to both. Spools are heavier than torches. Torch-style can handle an 11 lb. roll of wire where a spool only (that I've seen at least) can only handle a 2 lb. roll so you're changing often and dealing with tightly-wound wire which can be a little tricky.
Answer your Q?
 ^_^

Yes Tig would be the prefered method - but a mig may suffice....

I have access to all that stuff here at work and a pretty damn good machine shop to boot!

I get to watch and learn from the pipefitters and macinists on afternoon shift - I've been practicing for 8+ months and my welds still look like crap.

In order to properly weld with GTAW (tig) on aluminium, helium purge gas is best, with high frequency AC current.  This is due to the almost instantaneous oxidation of aluminium.

Matt, TIG welding is just like welding with gas.

I welded the part on with a TIG welder.  It is the part that holds the acc pump lever.

If Cameron had the carb, he could easily machine up a new shaft for the pump lever and screw it on.  Then you need the pump lever, the pump return spring, and the circlip.

Thanks for the suggestion.  If I do not get what I'd like, then I will take that route.  I have had no time to post pictures till now because of studying.

here they are!

In the first pictures you can see what the proper shaft should look like with all of the parts intact.  The one carb needed to be disassembled because it needed to be held in a vice while welding.  The other parts that are included with the carbs are not pictured.

The linkage is a Tayco Polished bar, Empi Large stacks (brand new) & braided lines with anodized fittings.

I'm sure the bore of the carb that was welded is probably out of round from the heat distortion, and that's not good so close to the butterfly. they could be very hard to tune.

nope, everything is fine.  and you can come and measure everything yourself.  We thought about that before going ahead with this.

How much for the sock in the third picture - does it need any repair to be usable? And does it come with a matching partner?

It needs a new rear Pan half.  The paint is a bit faded.  it used to be grey, but the hood bra covered the original paint.

Nice Patina look!  Very nice on the inside, keeps heat in well...

I will thorw it in free of charge with its partner...However, its in a bit better shape  :P

The venturi slides in just like it should.  The throttle shaft turns easy.  Tuning will be no different than any other IDA.

I'm not talking about the venturi or the shaft, I'm talking where the butterfly meets the body. Would be simular to having a twisted throttle shaft.

as you can see in the pictures, there are a pair of IDA carbs.

Nothing has been altered because of the repair made.  both of them are in spec with each other and another IDA that we compared it too.

Make me an offer people!
