Title: June 1968 Meyers manx resto, Project "This old Manx"
Post by: Geoff on November 28, 2009, 08:02:58 PM
This is the start of the resteration of my June 1968 Meyers Manx. In a previous thread I posted how In Oct I found an ad on Craigslist for this manx in San Jose. bruce and I crossed the border at 5pm on friday and 36 hrs later we were crossing the border Sunday 5am with this in tow!
Thanks again Bruce for making the trek with me.

This old Manx has spent the better part of 41 years in the heat and sun, faded and dull but very complete! Most Buggies have suffered the changing trends over the years, the 80's and 90's were not kind to many ;D so many were changed and updated along the way,re painted, modern seats, guages, body mods etc.

This one has managed to survive with only a hood scoop added and a tail light change.
That being said here are the as found pic's. I'll add lots more this week as I get time.

Above shows the orig Manx Tow bar, wrong hard top roof, Manx Bunpers front and rear

Incorrect tail lights, should have the 62-67 lights. It came with the orig Manx steel wheels and Commando tires (not shown)

I have it all torn down and body work has been started, more to follow.

The hood scoop will be long gone soon!

And tear down begins
(https://airspeedparts.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/normal_manx-teardown3.jpg)

The car also came with the orig Manx steel 14 and 15" widened steel wheels with the 1968 Commando tires!

I've been there a few times and it can get costly but they have nice machines in a warm clean shop.

I also used the outdoor sand blasting place (Canadian auto Restoration) in Langley for the pan and large items.

Here's the pan after blasting and a new fuel line and clutch tube.

That's some crazy old arc welding on that shortened pan.....but it's original.

Unfortunatly the former owner had cut large holes in the tail of the Manx to fit the ugly trailer lights. The good thing was you could see the outline of the orig vw tail lights.

The licence plate are was also trimmed at some point, bothe the light holes and plate area are show here undergoing repair.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.airspeedparts.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10002%2Fmanx-tail.jpg&hash=ccd637bc4f91138f8e725913ccb9521f10e39956)

A few layers of fiberglass, Dura glass then filler and primer.......Nice!!!

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.airspeedparts.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10002%2Fmanx-rear-bodywork.jpg&hash=c7231571c67119435f18e60a608d33d9fc985e8b)

A very very messy shop but i'm makin progress.
A few cracks in the gel on the fenders and some holes needed to be fixed then a coat of primer...

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.airspeedparts.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10002%2Fmanx-primer.jpg&hash=e27f50a6f18f518abf03d3c3b5c67944508cac14)

The hood had a large hole cut in it and it had sunk almost an inch in the center. I had to brace the hood from underneath and re glass it to get it back into shape.

Here's a shot from the orig Manx brochure, I was lucky enough to still have these three options on my Manx. The Commando Tires, Wide wheels and steering brakes as well as a few others ;D

Well I had a little luck today. After trying many hardware shops looking for the orig style hardware that came with the Manx when new...a little light bulb went on.  Since Bruce Meyers worked on boats why not try a boat building shop We have one very old shop that has been in business since the 50's here in town. After rooting thru dusty boxes a while,Sure enough they had what I needed in regular steel and Stainless! I picked up the hardware I needed in Stainless, pan bolts, dash and windsheild... Here's an example of the orig and the new stainless bolts. I'm sure many of you can get these from your local stores but it proved difficult around here.

A friend of mine used to make the "pull up" type of steering brake back in the early 70's.  It worked such that two levers that pivoted from the same shaft as the e-brake controlled either the left or right side for steering but when you pulled up on the e-brake it functioned just like the stock one.

The cable tabs were cut off the e-brake and rewelded on the two steering levers and a piece of flat bar welded on the bottom of the e-brake handle grabbed both independent steering levers (that sit outboard of the e-brake handle) to then work the e-brake.   The levers were made out of 1/8 flat bar and entended from the pivot point of the e-brake to about the beginning of handle area.  A small piece of round stock, maybe 1/4" x 1" long, (extending at a right angle from the end of the lever) allowed you to grab each steering brake with a finger.  Didn't take much pressure to actuate the brake.  Instead of the stock pin that holds the e-brake in place a longer bolt and nut were used to accommodate the extra width of the 2 steering levers.

Back in the 70's I had this setup on a 57 bug and it worked great with 6.50x16 rear tires (later 10x15) even though it only worked the one rear shoe.  Mind you that was a bus reduction box trans so the shoes were a good size.  Used 1950 bus spindles on the front married to the bug trailing arms so the car sat level.  No one had invented the class 11 bug yet but it was a stock bodied bug with 14" of ground clearance.  Later I returned the bug to its stock state and continued to use the steering brake with stock bug rear shoes.  It still worked well if one rear wheel would spin.

I am thinking of making a similar set up for my current buggy but I have the e-brake in front of the gear shift more like a bus.  This way you can use stock length  cables as well.  Rather than pull the lever up you would pull it to the rear.

The fellow who built the steering brake was Rocky Weinstein.  I believe he lives in S. Langley.  Ran into him at the 09 GCVWS and he still has a buggy with the steering brake setup on it.  Someone on here must know him.

It's been a while since I had time to work on the Manx but last friday I sprayed the last coat of primer and blocked it out on the weekend. Monday morning I delivered it to the body shop for a fresh coat of the original Manx Lime green. It was ready for pick up Tues Morning! ;D

Awaiting it's fresh Lime paint
(https://airspeedparts.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/manx-03-16-prime.jpg)

A few hours later...BAM!!!! Thats some bright paint! It's the correct color and matched the small area of orig gel that was in perfect shape.

Here's a few shots of the engine tined up. There are still a few things to do like rebuild the 32 Zenith, rebuild the fuel pump, proper coil bracket, swap the 009 for a 010 or 019 with black cap and some other odds and ends.
This is a 68 block that I converted to dog house for a little better cooling, other than that it's pretty much the way the Manxpower engines looked.

Here's the powdercoated windsheild frame, looks close to the anodized finish but tends to scuff fairly easy.

The windsheild is just resting in place as I need to find a seal for the bottom.

In this pic you can see how short the lower windsheild seal between the frame and hood is. It has shrunk some but must have been cut at some point? It's short on both sides by roughly the same amount. I'd like to find a new seal or patch this one with another. Worst case i'll find something else to use.

Pull that seal out so you can see what it's profile is like.  Then go to Spae-Naur, they have many different profiles.

Got a few hours in on the buggy this weekend. I had an old sidewinder style exhaust but it wasn't the correct one and I didn't really like the look of the larger glasspack on the ones the Manx Store now sells, so....

I went about building my own, not quite finished but ya get the idea. I found an NOS Glasspack from 1969 so I think it should look the part.

Here's the header.

Those windshield frames can be a real bear especially when working with old glass. Rob and I spent a weekend on his and we still don't have it to where we were totally happy with it. The old glass is an inch thick in the top corner and not quite straight so it made for a lot of fun.
Good luck
Andy
The buggys are starting to come out of hibernation so its just about time for a buggy cruise!

Thanks to Russ at Frances Andrew site Furnishings I was able to get a new bumper bar bent up. The old original Manx bumper was in less than great shape with the lower bar badly damaged.
Before

After

a little more welding and sanding and it's off to the chrome shop!

Geoff,

looks amazing, having built one I thought was nice.
This again another level. nice work, love the OG Manx touches.
All the windsheild rubbers i have seen and have had were short an equal amount at both ends.
these thing are FUN..
cant wait to see it finished.
Cheers,
Bill

When I built the HebRod I used a convertable windsheild bow seal and thought it may be close. I ordered one up and with a pair of scissors trimed a small flap off and it fits and works better than the orig! Best part is it was under $10

I went for my first drive! It was just down the lane and back a few times as I jetted the Zenith but it was a milestone.

First off I got my chrome back yesterday.... The front and rear bumpers really look nice considering what I started with.

Installed the Delswift mirror, Bumpers, skid plate and a few other things.

Lots more to do tomorrow. I still need to build the air filter (old school oil bath) licence plate mount, root etc..

Anyways just wanted to share the big day! I love driving this already.

Great job Geoff. Car looks wicked and I can't wait to see it up close. Most people on the asf can appreciate the manx and its history, but it's just too bad that when you're cruising around in it most people who pause to take a look won't realize the rarity of the vehicle and that it's not just another glass buggy.

I compare it to any one of the incredible cars that comes out of the DVKK stable or where ever. If I hadn't seen the car before and up close and in magazine spreads, and it had just driven past me, I would admire it but I wouldn't be able to appreciate all the time, money and attention to detail that went into it. Although I'm sure you guys build them for yourselves to enjoy, in some small way we want everyone to enjoy them as well. I think you understand my point.

Ok Geoff, what are those tires you're running on the rear? Where did ya get them, how much did they cost? I love that classic look. I found my rear wheels in Chiliwack, but need tires. I'd love something like that that, or a low priced similar look.

While building my Manx I was looking all over for info and documents regarding what was correct for my year Manx. I talked with a good friend (Deano at Hot VW's) and he told me in his archives he had some orig build instructions for the Manx from 68.

Well I never had the chance until a few weeks ago to look into this, What I found was quite amazing.

Deano passed me the file and when we opened it I was amazed to see a complete instruction set for the Manx, The Toad, all wiring as well as the Camping moduals among other things. Then the best part! Inside was aprox 10 orig 8x11 black and white glossy photos used for the orig Meyers catalog!! The pics were taken by one of the Hot VW's staff back in the 60's. I have contacted Bruce and winnie and they have copies of most already but Deano will copy anything they do not already have.

Here are a few pic's
